Learn about the Karaite
Nov 2017 • Family
The Karaites were once a large Jewish sect that has almost disappeared.the new museum is a fascinating view of their world. Our docent was a Karaite Jew who was eager to explain the various differences between Rabbinic and Karaite Judaism . The museum is not large and and can be viewed in less than an hour.

Brand new museum

JUST opened. A 10 minute video with historical and theological overview of the Karaites. Enough displays to get the basic understanding of them. Lots of stairs to get down stairs. Viewing areas with windows to see the synagogue from the lower levels of the museum.

A different perspective of Judaism
May 2016 • Business
There are many minorities in Israel, one being the Karaites. A little known sect of Judaism. Their virtually underground place of worship is an interesting place to visit and includes a short lecture (20 minutes) about the Karaites and their beliefs, together with explanations regarding the building in which it's housed and the various aspects inside. Very interesting, especially for return visitors and those who prefer off the beaten track.

It's a really nice place. This synagogue is the oldest synagogue of the world that's still in use, and is the on,y one that's undreground. The karaites Jews only stick to what's written in the Torah. The guy who guards the place, is really nice and would gladly take you downstairs and explain everything to you

Karaite Synagogue
Interesting insight into a group of Jews most people know little about.
The exhibits could use some more imagination.

Oldest synagogue in Jerusalem
Dec 2011 • Friends
One of Jerusalem's most interesting synagogues. This underground place of worship in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City belongs to the Karaite Jews--Jews who believe only in the Biblical commandments, not the later rabbinic decrees that the majority of the world's Jews live by today. The synagogue is underground--from the Psalm: "From the depths I called out to You." and non-Karaites can only look in, not actually enter--since all who enter must undergo ritual purification. Nevertheless, it's an experience, and the little museum next to the synagogue has some fascinating artifacts.

Awesome experience, meeting the people, hearing and seeing parts of their history!
The Synagogue is one of the oldest in the world dating back to the 8th century. They have a guided tour and have a video presentation, and the guide Joshua Levy is most delightful and is in the process of learning English. Since it is in the old city make sure you have good walking shoes and your camera, The one bad thing about it is that it is not on the tour guide maps that they give out at the Tourist Information Center at the Jaffa Gate, but if you ask the person at the desk to pinpoint it on the map they will. I didn't do that and when asking people in the Jewish quarter they didn't know where it was either. An Arab storekeeper in the Armenian Quarter had his son guide me to the place.
