This spectacular church is on the slopes of the Mount of Olives, across from the Old City of Jerusalem. The golden onion-shaped domes indicate that the Church has Russian origins. You get a good view of the church from the lookout on top of the Mount of Olives. When we were there the Church was not open. Mary Magdalena is a saint in the Orthodox Church. Although the Catholic Church has traditionally regarded Mary Maddalena a woman of ill-fame, there is no Biblical evidence support for this belief.

The church is a part of an Orthodox convent, and can only be accessed on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 to 12 a.m. You can buy some nice souvenirs there, such as honey, incense, candles and pictures of Russian tzar family.

Of all of the churches on the slopes of Mount Olive, this one is the most eye-catching, even if technically not exceedingly important from the historic point of view. Well worth a stop.

The Orthodox Church of Saint Mary Magdalena is only opened to visitors on Tuesday and Thursday from 10-12 unless you have made prior arrangements. If the door is closed and you are here during these hours ring the buzzer to the left.

The church grounds are pretty and there is a nice view.

There is a sign that reads no photos are allowed inside of the church.

Absolutely visually stunning exterior . We were there when it was not open but spoke to a clergy man who was passing by and told us that it was not so grand inside .

I wanted to visit this church - but the visiting hours are so restrictive that it is almost impossible! So I have been to the gate once, and in the neighborhood a few times!!

I was with a group of Russian friends when we visited so, although I am not Russian orthodox, we were able to visit (note: it is open to others only Tuesday and Thursday mornings)
The Church of Mary Magdalene, which we could see while atop the Mount of Olives, was built by Tsar Alexander III in the traditional Russian style (replete with seven gilded, golden domes that sparkle in the sun). Its exterior is absolutely stunning.
The interior is home to a beautiful, tranquil garden and the church is filled with paintings and gorgeous Orthodox icons.
In the crypt lay the remains of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth (killed in the Russian revolution of 1917) and Princess Alice of Greece (who harbored Jews during the Nazi occupation of Greece).
Definitely worth a visit if time permits.

My wife and I visited Jerusalem in May 2014. Once we left Mount Zion we proceeded to the Mount of Olives. This church was our first stop. Seven gilded onion domes, each topped by a tall Russian orthrodox cross, make the church of St Mary Magdalene one of Jerusalem's most picturesque sights. The church stands on the western slope of the Mount of Olives above the Garden of Gethsemane and the church of All Nations. It commemorates Mary from Magdala. Mary is named in the gospels as being present at Christ's crucifixion and who was the first recorded witness of His resurrection.

This church on the Mt. of Olives built in the 19th century in honor of the Czar's wife. The entire compound has beautiful gardens and church used by the Russian Orthodox nuns as well as incoming tourism. Want to visit, just press on the intercom any morning and the nuns may allow you in for a visit.
