We just returned from a trip throughout Israel and found that restaurants and street shops prefer cash, especially USD, for purchases. Euros were a problem since coins are not accepted by banks and, therefore, vendors. Also, we have heard of credit card scams. Example: merchant writes up an incorrect price on your purchase, you correct it, but the change never goes through. Result, you pay twice. Note that bank ATMs are all around, so you can get cash from them. Sometimes even in the NIS.

This used to be a must gathering place for youth. On a Thursday night (in the winter) and Saturday night (in the summer) you will still find the crowds of youth from around the world gathering. If you above 21, skip this. The tourist stores have great selections - BECAUSE their prices are so high they make a fortune from you. This is no longer a must see. It is the opposite (unless you are 21 or younger)

Ben Yehuda Street is certainly a good place to buy souveneirs- but I do not believe there is really anything to see here. It is also rather touristy- lots of shops catering to tourists that locals never go to, particularly as they can be more expensive than shops just around the corner on Shammai St. or on Jaffa Street. It's also full of beggars, which can be an annoyance.

Great place to walk, enjoy a snack and negotiate. We walked along this street several times as it's near our (Arthur) hotel. The only major thing I'd add is that there are some very distinctive things in some of the shops - and it's definitely expected in many that you will negotiate a price. We did this. Shop keepers in many cases will give an additional discount for cash.

Stay far away from this booth in the market. We were taken advantage of and over charged by these men. I have attached the picture of the booth. We went back with the concierge of the hotel. He tried to negotiate with the men and let them know that we were overcharged, and they would not hear of it, or friends that we were traveling with were taken advantage of by these people as well.

Its always happening and you can take that in any direction you want! Shopping: trinkets to diamonds. Food: the must have Felafel to something with more elegance. Music. Lights. Atmosphere. Israelis just doing their thing.
Never say 'been there done that' because Ben Yehuda is always re-inventing itself. A happy place where you can choose the direction that feels right!

You must go to this area, every visit. It is the Shuk, the market. You can get almost anything there; fresh meat & fish, vegetables & bakery, spices and nuts, take out food (Tzidkiyahu is the best), sit-down dining, religious articles... Food vendors hand out samples.

But most of all, observe the people; the vendors and the patrons. You might find everybody there. Religious and secular Jewish, Christian, Muslim... everybody. All very peaceful.

Jerusalem is a magical city like none other. The ancient and modern history is everywhere you walk. The people are amazing and friendly. The food is wonderful wherever you go. Felt very safe at all times as well. Do not wait any longer to go!

Lots of regular shopping here... shoes, clothes, a couple of pharmacy's, etc. There is also a number of restaurants you can choose from. So if you're looking for a fun place that gets lively at night, but still feels safe, this is it.

My son was in Israel end of December 2014 into January 2015 on a birthright trip. He bought what he thought was a 14K gold Jewish star. It went into the washing machine today by mistake and it turned out to be tin (its all copper looking and black). He bought it at Jewels of Jerusalem on Ben Yehuda street. I just wanted others to know that they rip you off so be careful. I guess they saw an 18 year old boy come in and took advantage of him. I have started the process of disputing the charge but was basically told if you buy it in person you get stuck. They should be ashamed of themselves.
