My boyfriend and I decided to do the free tour in jerusalem on a rainy day. We were a very small group of only 4 people, so it felt like a private tour. Jonny led the two hour tour. He has such a great humor and told us so many interesting things about jerusalem’s history, culture and people. I would recommend this tour to anyone and the recommendation to tip 50 shekels per person was totally fine.

Marx took us through the four communities of the old town of Jerusalem and told us a lot about the religion and architechture of each part. He was very entertaining and his voice carried well in spite of all the other groups nearby. Really a very good tour

I am disappointed because this time they ruined the Sandeman Free tour spirit. It supposed ti be based on tips, but this time Shimon ( the tour guide) told us on the beginning that normaly people pay 50 Schekels. I take allways Sandeman tours because i love the way they do the tours, but when there is someone like Shimon than they ruin the point of the Sandeman. The tour and the organisation was not so bad, not among the best as well. He had interesting timeline and interesting facts but at the end when i gave him 40 Schekels he was not satisfied.
I hope that the other tour guides are better. Anyway i will continue doing Sandeman because i will not allow that one person ruin the spirit of the Sandeman

Hello Ivana B, Thank you for taking the time to review us on TripAdvisor and for joining the tour of Jerusalem. We really appreciate your feedback as it helps us to continue making improvements and ensure that tours and experiences promoted by SANDEMANs NEW Europe meet the high standards that travellers expect. We are concerned to learn that your tour with Shimon did not meet your expectations. The Free Tour is described as such because there is no maximum or minimum amount any guest is expected to tip; the idea is that every guest should feel comfortable to tip in such a way that reflects their individual budget and what they thought the tour was worth. Any guest who does not wish to tip may decline to do so, and the guides we work with are aware that pressuring guests to tip goes against the Free Tour philosophy. We are truly sorry if your experience did not reflect that. This is not only detrimental to your enjoyment of the tour, but undoes much of the hard work of ourselves and the other guides we work with to promote the concept of a free tour. Thank you once again for reviewing us on TripAdvisor and for joining the tour. We hope to see you again soon on other tours, so we may show you that this experience does not reflect the usual standard of service. Kind regards, The SANDEMANs Team

I did the free walking tour and normally I m a huge fan of the walking tour of Sandeman. This time i was really disappointed about the tour, in the beginning it was already said the tour was 50 shekels and our group was with 30, which is way too much in the small streets of Jerusalem. Furthermore, the information was the same you could get from the lonely planet i took with me. Again: normally I love the passioned people of sandeman but this was different from the rest. Better take a paid one if you really want to know something more and be assured of a small group.

A really good tour to understand the complex history of Jerusalem’s old city. Our guide, Dror, gave really clear explanations about the historical and theological significance of this city. Would really recommend this!

Alex was a thoughtful and enthusiastic guide who brought a personal touch to the tour. He took time to answer additional questions during the helpfully spaced breaks, and he provided a nuanced and interesting overview of the Old City of Jerusalem and its many complexities. Highly recommend!

I did the Free walking tour with Alex. He was an amazing speaker and made this tour super interesting. His voice was also loud enough that everyone could hear and this was a large tour group. I am very satisfied with my experience at the Old City today, I will actually book the Holy City tour because Alex got me intrigued and made me want to come back to hear about all the sites more in depth.

We took both the 2-hour free walking tour and the 4-hour Holy City Tour and they were both excellent. Both tours started at the Jaffa Gate at 11 am. They were well organized and easy to find. The free tour with our guide Tomel hit the highlights of the old city and is a great introduction. Tomel was very knowledgeable and the tour was interesting start to finish. This tour is all tip based and the average tip was suggested at 50 shekels.

Liron was our guide for the 4-hour tour and he was very enthusiastic about his city and knew a lot about the history, people and religions here. This tour went more in depth into the main sites including various locations in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Western Wall, and we were able to visit Temple Mount. We learned a lot about the significance of each location to the various religions. Another great tour of an amazing place.

I would highly recommend doing both tours if you have the time.
