On our first trip to Israel we went to Bethlehem on a Friday afternoon when the Tomb of Rachel was closed for the Sabbath. This time we didn't want to miss it.
The Tomb of Rachel is near Bethlehem, very close to Checkpoint 300--on the Israeli side of the wall (don't go through the checkpoint, stay on the Israeli side of the wall.)
You can get to the Tomb of Rachel from Checkpoint 300 via private car, taxi, or bus (only vehicles are allowed on the short access road to the Tomb of Rachel which has the 30 foot security wall on either side and at the end--you can't walk on the access road).
As we had limited time, we decided to stop at the Tomb of Rachel on our way back to Jerusalem after our Hebron Dual Narrative Tour with Abraham Tours.
Abraham Tours uses public transportation, in this case it was the armored Egged bus 381 from Hebron to Jerusalem. Our Abraham Tours Guide helped us to get off the Egged bus from Hebron at the right stop--Rosemarin Street (Officially: Egged Bus 381, Ha-Rosemarin/Roads 200) and our guide pointed us in the right direction.
We then used either maps.me or Googlemaps (and I had printed a Googlemap at home just in case) to stay on course to Checkpoint 300 where there were numerous taxis.
From Rosemarin Sreet it was a 15 minute walk on a well lit street mostly with good sidewalks and traffic lights and signs to Checkpoint 300. We had brought good little flashlights, which were not needed, but we carry them all the time.
In the taxi, within about 5 minutes--or less--we were at the doors of Tomb of Rachel.
Men and women go through separate doors to separate sides of the tomb.
You can return to Jerusalem, if you are sleeping there, by taxi or by Egged Bus 163.
We stopped on the way back for Hebron. You can do this easily from Jerusalem, without the expense of a taxi. Egged Bus 163 goes to and from the Tomb of Rachel, from Jerusalem's Central Bus Station and other stops, several times a day.
Check the Egged bus schedule for current details. Note: On the Egged website, "Tomb of Rachel" (not Bethlehem or Checkpoint 300) is the name of the stop/destination.
Going to Rachel's Tomb was a nice ending to a great day. Getting the bus back to Jerusalem was easy. People at the tomb were kind and friendly. We got off the bus near the easy to spot Jaffa Gate/Mamilla Mall.
This is a holy site. Dress modestly. Be covered from collarbone to well below the knee, and with sleeves to the elbow or beyond.
Ask respectfully before taking any photos.

as an orthodox jew this is not really a "tourist attraction"
it is a place to go and cry your heart out to a mother who is always listening
a place to pray for all your dreams and aspirations
a place to seek solace from lifes trials and tribulations
a place of succor from a world gone crazy.
want to use it as a place to see the complex security issues , as another poster wrote? so then just ask yourself, why is the approach to "kever rachel" surrounded by concrete walls but the 2 mosques on the temple mount have an unprotected walkway bridge from the western wall plaza (besides their other approaches)?
i think that just about sums up all one needs to know about the "compex security issues" in israel

Rachel's tomb is not a tourist attraction at all. We went and there is a small room with lots of Jewish people praying, both sitting and against the tomb. Men and women are separate. You would obviously get a lot more out of this place if you are a practicing Jew.
As a tourist, it is a bit of a mission to get there - you have to get out to the separation wall, then walk up to the military checkpoint and go through there, then get a taxi to the site as you can't walk there (we tried and were stopped) - taxi cost us 15 shekels. You then have to wait for a bus (running infrequently) or try to hitchhike out. Hitching is very difficult from here as the Orthodox Jews were very reluctant to even look at us, let alone let us in their car. The only reason we got a ride was because we clung to a Jewish man looking for a ride out.
The tomb itself wasn't a big excitement and we only spent a few minutes there...
HOWEVER experiencing the separation wall and checkpoints was very interesting and worth the trip.

The Tomb of Rachel is part of the history of the Jews and is maintained by the Israeli authorities and is more like a fortress. Millions of dollars have been invested in order to be able to travel there under proper security and safety. This is holy site which has thousands upon thousands of people from all over the world coming to see and pray.
It is a must for anyone who has any kind of feeling for the safety of his wonderful nation.

This was a most numbing visit. The location of this tomb, to one of the matriarchs of Israel, is at the confluence of two "walls of separation", and two factories, and near where the buses transport the Palestinian workers back from their Israeli jobs. I could not help but think as to what Rachel would say today to find herself buried in this location.

Interesting site but not much to see, basically a cupboard with cloth. Easy access by bus 163. Surrounded by concrete walls, the place crowded with weeping,nodding women. Just a sad place. So thankful Jesus conquered the grave. We have hope not dispair!!

Historic place was turned into a Jews-only compound and separating it from Bethlehem. The Separation Wall was built around it, annexing it into Israel, and it is therefore accessible only from Jerusalem (and only to Jews) and not accessible at all from Bethlehem (and forbidden for Muslims).

We managed to visit this site on our way back from Bethlehem. Its proximity to the enormous security walls means there is a strong security presence. It is an interesting site and we would have stayed longer except for some rock throwing. Our ever vigilant guide got us out pretty quickly.

Yes, no problem at all. If you are using GPS, you may have to disable the territories prohibition function even though you are not going to the territories.
