We drove through the Negev from Tel-Aviv to Eilat. We had no idea what we would see. The excellent modern highway -- with services available -- goes through miles and miles of largely primeval, uninhabited landscape. The craters were in order from big to small, but the big one was best, with a dirt road that took us past many rock formations, such as Solomon's mines, the mushroom rock, and then we stopped at the temple copy of what it was like in the Old Testament when it was sacrifice time. We spent the whole family (7) two fantastic days with Ohad and Oded at the Machtesh (Crater). They know the area perfectly well, and it was a pleasure to share with them.
