Top ways to experience Karakoy Iskelesi and nearby attractions

The area
Neighborhood: Karakoy
Sitting pretty with an age-old air about it, Karakoy is situated on the European side of the Bosphorus at the mouth of the Golden Horn. Perhaps the city’s most historically significant area, it’s currently one of the most happening parts of town as well. Here street vendors and alfresco fish restaurants line the banks of the Horn where the views of major attractions across the water rival Karakoy’s own key attractions, such as the iconic 14th century Galata Tower and the Museum of Modern Art. A major hub for local and international waterborne traffic, Istanbul’s commercial and maritime heritage remains as relevant and evident as ever in Karakoy. Commuter ferries mingle with luxury cruise liners at its busy port, ensuring a continuously cosmopolitan flow of people..

This pier area corresponds to Eminonu Pier at the other end of the Galata Bridge. I think the Eminonu side has more restaurants if you count both sides of the bridge but you need to do a lot of walking to view them all whereas the restaurants here are all in one row. Also I can tell you from experience that some of the restaurants under the bridge do not serve alcohol, but as far as I could see, all the restaurants on the Karakoy pier do. The only other difference is that from the Eminonu end you have mostly a river view whereas from here you see much more water.

It’s a very short boat ride from Kadikoy, lovely to do on a sunny day .Only 5tl one way on the public boat . There are great views of Istanbul from the boat .Once there it’s a pleasant walk around the many little shops , market and attractive well priced restaurants .

I like to come here to take photos in the morning. When the weather is fine, you can see the beautiful shape of mosques and hills. A hidden spot to take photos! There are cafe and restaurants around this area, too. And one step into the small street, you can see very local areas of Istanbul.

Karakoy is a district for foodies at the crossroads of Bosphorus & Golden Horn and is quite accessible by boat, train and bus...There are several fish restaurants, trendy cafes & clubs and third wave coffee shops in the area, my favorite was the ones at Fransiz Gecidi...You can easily spend half day here on foot...

Perfect way to move from one side to another of the ever increasing Istanbul!
As this time we stayed on the Asian side to be with friends the Ferry is the easiest and cheaper way to move from and to Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu and enjoy the marvels of Istanbul. Also the view that you get is rather interesting!

The pier is less busy than Eminou on the other end of Galata Bridge. We didn't visit it as part of a boat tour since we walked through Galata Bridge a few times to go to Galata Tower, and later to visit one of the newly discovered restaurants. When you turn on the right after crossing the Golden Horn through Galata Bridge, right on the shore is a long line of restaurants. We always chose an outside sitting, to be able to watch the traffic of Karakoy Pier, the coming and going of smaller and bigger ships, and the desperately arguing seagulls when someone threw some potato chips to make the sight more vibrant and exciting. Karakoy Iskelesi is an excellent place to enjoy the scenery of a busy Harbour.

We did our own Bosphorus cruise by getting the regular ferry across to Karakoy. In our case the was the point and at 5TL each way was a real bargain. We wandered around Karakoy people watching which was very pleasant.

We used the ferry from the nearest quay to Galatea bridge on the Golden Horn and the ticket machines are easily converted to English. All simplicity and and an intercontinental voyage ticked off!

Karaköy is one of the ferry ports located next to Galata Bridge. I personally prefer this one to Eminönü as there are less crowds, many restaurants and cafes are located around and it is closer to the path that goes up to Taksim. In December there was a big construction work going around, so keep in mind you may hear some noise. But it should not be a big problem as people generally use the spot to meet each other.

Karaköy Iskelesi is not beautiful, nevertheless I have given it five stars because it is a central site in Istanbul. With a boat from here you can get far, e.g. to the Asian districts of Istanbul. In so far it is very important.
Some of the houses around this pier are old and rundown. They are also colourful and exceptional. They are not uniform and this form an excellent background for photos, especially in the hours of late afternoon, when the sun goes down. Moreover, the sight from this pier is phantastic and there are always many people around to watch.

This pier is a good place to take a walk in the morning or in the evening. There is a cafe near here and you can spend some time looking the ferry going to and fro on the sea. The view of the old city of Istanbul from here is excellent!! There are some shops along the pier, but you can enjoy shopping in other places, too. You can take the ferry bound for the Golden Horn from here, too. It's also very easy to go to the Asian side from here.
金角湾に行くフェリーはここから出ています。他の路線に比べて便数は少ないので時刻を調べてから行ったほうがいいかもしれません。桟橋の周辺にはお店もありますが、ここでなくても買えるものが多い気がします。
