About
Dialogue in the Dark invites visitors to leave the world‘s visual cacophony behind and to experience a completely non-visual world. Up to 10 people per group receive a short briefing and are introduced to the use of a long cane before embarking on their journey through darkness. The exhibition consists of a series of scenarios in complete darkness, such as a public park, a bustling city street, a food market, a boat or a cafe. Passing through these dark zones assisted by their visually impaired facilitator, they begin to explore the dark world with their other senses: sound, smell and touch. While visitors perceive everything in a completely new way their visually impaired facilitators provide support throughout the entiry tour, as to them this world is "visible". Depending on the size of the exhibition, the tour lasts 60 to 90 minutes.
Duration: 1-2 hours

The area

Address
Neighborhood: Sisli
For much of Istanbul’s history, Sisli and the area just north of Taksim Square were open countryside used mostly as hunting grounds. These days, Sisli and its chic streets are considered the very heart of contemporary Istanbuli life, where an epicenter of fashion and a thriving business district meet to create an expressly “downtown” feel. Though largely a residential neighborhood, luxury hotels, fine dining restaurants, and upscale shops abound with many of them situated inside or nearby Cevahir Istanbul, the biggest shopping mall in Europe and second biggest urban shopping mall in the world. Shopaholics and fashionistas travel from near and far to browse the area's mix of major global brand items and creations by popular Turkish designers.

To understand the daily life of the visually impaired, this is an amazing experience. The staff are very helpful (Two of the staff that assisted me, my friends and a family of four were visually impaired. Them talking about the difficulties they face made me understand their struggles more. They were very funny, good at their work as a guide and kind also.

An amazing experience, would absolutely recommend.

We did Dialogue in the Silence (an experience of being deaf) as the Dialogue in the Dark was only in Turkish on the day we arrived.

This was a brilliant experience. The guide took us through some funny games, starting with facial expressions, then leaning/guessing signs for body parts, then learning some basic sign language and doing a tricky team work exercise that would have been taken 2 minutes if we could talk, but actually took 10 minutes. It was funny but also educational: we started off confused with a lot of misunderstandings, although gradually you learn to communicate using your hands. Really recommend it.

It's very interesting place to experience. you understand more about you, your senses and life. on the other hand it's a clever project as a social enterprise.

if you visit istanbul or if you are already in istanbul, it is a must to experience this!

I went there and was refused entry as the staff there said that I could not use the Istanbul Tourist Pass even it is clearly stated that this place is listed under the Istanbul Tourist Pass as free. They told me that Istanbul Tourist Pass did not update.

When they refused, I then asked how much it costs. They told me it costs 99 lira. But it is only for Turkish and not for tourists. I was refused entry as I was a foreigner.

I appeal to all tourists to avoid this place.

This will understand only those who experienced this! 1.5 hour spent in the complete darkness in which you have a tour through the streets of Istanbul - park, pedestrian street, have a ride with tram and boat - and all in complete darkness guided by the actual blind person.. It is overwhelming, shocking and scary experience as I have never thought that life of the blind is so difficult.. It changed some things in me and definitely recommended to everyone to raise more empathy to people around us and appreciate more that we can see this wonderful world!

A top quality experience of how it is to be blind and travel around Istanbul. We were a mixed group of Turkish & English visitors. Our guides were completely bi-lingual so this was not a problem. We were gently & safely guided through some iconic Istanbul experiences of a park, market, tram & boat amongst others. At the beginning I was anxious as the dark was truly dark, you could not see a hand in front of your face, but our guide was brilliant in explaining, guiding and looking after us & I soon relaxed. Take some small change with you so that you may experience buying and drinking a tea or soft drink & hear how the bartender checks that your money is correct. I thoroughly recommend this experience & came away with a feeling of admiration & wonder at how blind people manage their lives in our hurried, careless world.

The consultants are rude. They act inhumanely. The order is beyond awful. I don't like it at all. I don't recommend it.
