Istanbul Modern is one of the few museums in Turkey that is on par with its European counterparts. Of course how well you relate with the art inside is subjective (and also depends on the exhibitions that are in place at the time). Personally I think the museum is in a way similar to prominent modern art museums in Europe... More

Don't miss the Istanbul Modern! Good collection of contemporary work by Turkish and international artists! Some great video pieces that must be seen. The retrospective of Eviner's work was just mind-blowing! I wish the basement floor would leave it up permanently. For the non-art lovers, the museum is a special spot of calm in the city! Gorgeous cafe with a... More

I recommend for everyone. One of the best art and culture museum I have seen. Also the area Şişli Beşiktaş is great to walk around.

It was very expensive and boring. The museum building is nice and new, but the art inside is poor and not so interesting.

Some really fun and accessible modern art. One highlight is their restaurant with a great view of the boats going up and down the Bosphorus. And the food was one of the best meals I had in Istanbul!

I've been to modern art museums around the world but this is one of the most engaging. All exhibits were done by Turkish artists, none of whom I'd ever heard of, but the works of art were excellent and probably easily appreciated even by those who normally do not like modern art. The one thing to note is that modern... More

Istanbul Modern is one of the best modern museums I have ever been to. The building is normal but the art pieces inside are incredibly amazing! From paintings to sculptures to simple ceiling decorations! I really took my time to carefully observe every piece of art and most were really intriguing on how the artists came up with the idea... One of my favourite museums. Firstly, the view of the Bosphorous is amazing from the restaurant. The exhibit itself is a bit of an acquired taste - but personally, I enjoyed it. The artworks are quirky, some really deep, some extremely avant-garde--but my favourite was the installation of hanging books!

This museum is so well done and the exhibits we saw were wonderful. If you are in Istanbul for an extended visit, it is also a nice change from all of the mosques and ancient attractions. They also have a great restaurant with a lovely view of the Bosphorus and delicious food. We enjoyed the whole experience.

Istanbul Modern is not to be missed. Even if you plan to focus on the city’s many historical sites, you owe it to yourself to experience Istanbul (in particular) and Turkey (in general) from the varied perspectives of its thoughtful modern and contemporary artists. Especially given the tumult the country is in today (after events like last week’s unsuccessful coup... More

Staying in Karakoy

Neighborhood Profile
Karakoy
Sitting pretty with an age-old air about it, Karakoy is situated on the European side of the Bosphorus at the mouth of the Golden Horn. Perhaps the city’s most historically significant area, it’s currently one of the most happening parts of town as well. Here street vendors and alfresco fish restaurants line the banks of the Horn where the views of major attractions across the water rival Karakoy’s own key attractions, such as the iconic 14th century Galata Tower and the Museum of Modern Art. A major hub for local and international waterborne traffic, Istanbul’s commercial and maritime heritage remains as relevant and evident as ever in Karakoy. Commuter ferries mingle with luxury cruise liners at its busy port, ensuring a continuously cosmopolitan flow of people..
