This museum is so well done and the exhibits we saw were wonderful. If you are in Istanbul for an extended visit, it is also a nice change from all of the mosques and ancient attractions. They also have a great restaurant with a lovely view of the Bosphorus and delicious food. We enjoyed the whole experience.

Istanbul Modern is not to be missed. Even if you plan to focus on the city’s many historical sites, you owe it to yourself to experience Istanbul (in particular) and Turkey (in general) from the varied perspectives of its thoughtful modern and contemporary artists. Especially given the tumult the country is in today (after events like last week’s unsuccessful coup... More

If you need a break from all the relics, the Modern is a good way to spend a few hours. Great art work from all over the world--neither too big nor too small with a great view of the waterfront. Restaurant was supposed to be good but service wasn't too friendly. Stick to the art work. Just take the tram... More

The museum is on the small side, so we spent under 2 hours there, I think. That didn't feel rushed. There was a nice array of media and it was curated well. One thing that impressed me the most was that there was a real downplay of the pretension which normally accompanies modern and contemporary art. The space itself is... More

After looking at museums of many old things, this was a nice contrast. There is also a lovely cafe for lunch or a little rest. When there isn't a big cruise ship docked there, it offers a nice view of the bosphourus.

Down to earth museum with good art (some slightly dated) and very good temporary exhibitions. If you want to spoil yourself, have lunch in the restaurant overlooking the Bosperus... not cheap but very good food!

A very good modern Museum, at the time I visited it had a nice exhibition about gentrification in Istanbul but also several permanent exhibitions can be found. Maybe not the first priority if you have little time but especially on a rainy day worth a visit. Free entrance on Thursday! :-)

It was hard to find the entrance but we managed. Spent 3 hours lost in the art- there is lots to see. Upstairs main gallery, downstairs photo gallery and library, fancy restaurant with good views. The service was good at the restaurant but it's very pricy. Food was amazing though- had a thin crust margarita pizza (25TL). There's a lot... More

Interesting, spacious, very contemporary. A great contrast to old Istanbul and the sights and smells. Recommended

Staying in Karakoy

Neighborhood Profile
Karakoy
Sitting pretty with an age-old air about it, Karakoy is situated on the European side of the Bosphorus at the mouth of the Golden Horn. Perhaps the city’s most historically significant area, it’s currently one of the most happening parts of town as well. Here street vendors and alfresco fish restaurants line the banks of the Horn where the views of major attractions across the water rival Karakoy’s own key attractions, such as the iconic 14th century Galata Tower and the Museum of Modern Art. A major hub for local and international waterborne traffic, Istanbul’s commercial and maritime heritage remains as relevant and evident as ever in Karakoy. Commuter ferries mingle with luxury cruise liners at its busy port, ensuring a continuously cosmopolitan flow of people..
