The area
Neighborhood: Uskudar
Home to more than half a million residents, Uskudar on the Asian side of the Bosphorus is one of Istanbul’s most densely populated neighborhoods. Once a Greek colony, later a haven for people from across the Mediterranean and the Middle East, this gateway to Asia has been an active and diverse hub for eons. Still, visitors to Uskudar are often more overcome by its myriad treasures than by its many thousand residents. And with fairytale settings such as the “Maiden’s Tower” as well as grand examples of Ottoman Era architecture, plenty of parks, a gorgeous and lengthy coastline, and some of Turkey’s holiest sites, there’s no end to the sightseeing possibilities. Easily reached from the city’s European shores via a steady network of ferries, time spent in Uskudar reveals a “real life” Istanbul that many who experience find extremely fascinating.

Mesmerizing Contemporary Masterpiece
Feb 2020 • Solo
Far from the tourist crowds of Sultanahmet, near the powerful serenity and peace of vast Karacaahmet cemetery, Sakirin mosque is an easily accessible, mesmerizing masterpiece of contemporary architecture.

The only mosque in Turkey designed by a woman, Sakirin is the perfect counterbalance to more celebrated - and tourist-crowded - Ottoman grand mosques. A spiritual and aesthetic experience, absolutely free and easily accessible by bus, taxi or even on foot, I walked there myself from the major ferryboat hub of Üsküdar on the Asian side.

I strongly recommend a visit here if you're interested in architecture and art, are spiritually inclined, or simply want to enjoy a little serenity away from the hordes of tourists and into the vastness of beautiful Karacaahmet resting place.

A modern mosque for a change
Dec 2018 • Couples
Very interesting contrast to all the classic mosques we visited. Lots of light in the tasteful, modern interiour. Kind people gave us bags with goodies which obviously is a tradition at Friday prayers. Note the fountain in the courtyard with a half-sphere always covered by a sheet of running water.

And the architect is a woman!

Nice modern mosque at the edge of the largest cemetery of Istanbul.
Some might find the inner decoration over the top, I was positively surprised by this different approach of a female architect. In good steps of the Sultan's architect Sinan.

Beautiful modern Mosque
Oct 2016 • Couples
The Şakirin Mosque is a modern looking building which was opened in 2009. Located in Üsküdar right next to a graveyard this Mosque is definitely worth a visit. While the outside is very impressive the inside appears to be much simpler but quite elegant. This Mosque is very different compared to all the historical ones which makes it quite special. Not many tourist can be found there, but the people were very friendly and welcoming to the tourists that did come to visit.

Beautiful

What a beautiful Mosque. So much to look at on the inside and so clean and simple on the outside. Such peace at the outside location/graveyard. Modern and respectful.. no wander there is a rumor (according to the Turkish people) that a lot of well respected famous people are fighting to reserve graves there.
