Neighborhood: Grand Bazaar
Tourists, hawkers, and locals come together at the Grand Bazaar to comb its labyrinthine passageways in search of a bargain – be it a pair of brand name jeans, a handcrafted silk rug, or a perfectly brewed cup of tea. Outside the vast bazaar, worn, narrow streets wind their way down from its lofty perch to the southern shore of the Golden Horn, where the evocatively aromatic Spice Bazaar beckons alongside the elegant New Mosque (opened in 1665). Nearby, the famed Galata Bridge offers pedestrian access to urban delights across the river in Istanbul’s more residential and contemporary neighborhoods, while the must-see sights of Sultanahmet are but a leisurely stroll away.

- Jon F6 contributionsPressure to tip ruins the experience.Very poor instructions on what to do and when, very grumpy staff. Time will tell if the pain of the scrub and oil massage was worth it.... I kept being harassed to give a tip in cash to each member of staff! Not pleasant. Wouldn't go again.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 13, 2023
- Donald MLondon, United Kingdom26 contributionsGood experience but expensive for what was offeredA good experience of the Hamam at this location. I thought it was a bit expensive for what was on offer but the experience was worth it. I had read that after you’ve been washed and scrubbed then the best thing is to wash it all off and go back into the hot slab room. I had to be firm about going back in but glad I did. The Indian Head Massage was very good and could have lasted a bit longer for the money - 30 minutes for £60 was a bit short changing customers. Then the insistence on a tip for each of the ‘service providers’. I enjoyed it but I think I would want a place that offered better value for money.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 24, 2023
- 2058-KWSt. Albans, United Kingdom70 contributionsAuthentic massageThe experience is authentic and you feel you are going back in time which I guess reflects the age of this place. The massage was very good and I felt invigorated after I hit fresh air. The only thing letting the experience down was the repeated pressure to tip, not only from the guy giving the massage, but also the guy providing the towels.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten February 10, 2024
- rahulkaidBengaluru, India9 contributionsAuthentic ancient Hamam, Walk in anytimeNo appointments needed for this place, just walk in (which was very important for us). A very traditional ambience, and it is quietly hidden away in the bustling busy streets close to the Hagia Sophia. After a long day of walking and site seeing, the bath took us back in time. You come in and they give you a small kit that includes the disposable body lufa. You are directed into the changing room where you change into your towel. Then you are directed into the Sauna, which is the large octagonal marble slab shown in the pictures . Spend some time there, and your attendant comes in to scrub you down. He's really rough, but it's a part of the experience and you feel really clean after that. Then you take a shower and then change back into your clothes. Chai and water are paid for separately. I had a wonderful experience. My wife did not have a similar pleasant experience. Her scrubber showed little interest and her scrubbing finished in a couple of minutes. Also be prepared to be hassled for tips, which I guess is a part of the traditional experience too.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 11, 2024
- Mark DUnited Kingdom49 contributionsTipsy for tipsFelt more like being channeled through a production line instead of having a relaxing experience. Most irritating was the brazen requests for tips for even the most menial tasks. This certainly was the case in the male section. Fortunately my female companions did not encounter similar requests on their side of the hamam. This was my third Turkish bath in Istanbul and by far my least favourite. Its convenience adjacent to the Grand Bazaar is its unique selling point. If you decide to plan a visit to a hamam whilst you are in Istanbul, I'd advise looking beyond Cemberlitas, as there are much more pleasant offerings available.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 30, 2024
- FranLondon, United Kingdom64 contributionsWas hoping for more professionalism.I came here today with my mom. The building is beautiful, when you go inside the hamam you travel back in time and it’s so easy to imagine how it used to be back in the days. The lady at reception was a bit rude and gave me the wrong price while I was specifying which services my mom and I wanted. The whole experience felt a bit rushed and careless. The bath lasted 10 minutes, then I was being rushed to get an oil massage (which was included in the package I purchased). The massage was good I could tell from the way she was touching me that the massage therapist knew what to do. Again, it was mean to be 50 minutes but felt way less. I was in the same room with other people with all the massage beds parallels to each other ( I didn’t mind at all) but could hear people shouting next door which was taking away the atmosphere. After that I decided to go back inside the hamam and enjoy a bit more the heat and the beautiful building. Drinks were not included and when not busy, staff was rushing to go back to their phones (some parts of the hamam were left unattended, which deserved a bit more attention). Won’t rush back.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 21, 2024
- coccoNew York City, New York65 contributionsIncredible !It was a great experience! Being American and more puritanical than most cultures, it was a bit uncomfortable letting someone scrub my body while I just laid there on marble naked with just panties on ! It was a very different experience but it was great ! My massage person wasn’t the friendliest but I guess it was because of the language barrier … I really couldn’t understand what she was saying and she got frustrated! All in all I’m glad I did with my family because the place inside is incredible ! The marble is insane ! I never felt cleaner after walking out of there ! Lol When in Istanbul i would recommend this Turkish bath because it’s quite an experience and you shouldn’t miss it !Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 13, 2024
- Jamie B1 contributionLovely experienceThis venue is literally upon you when you alight the tram, so no searching needed; although that wouldn't be an issue in Istanbul's magical surroundings. I really enjoyed my massage and you can feel the history of the place, plus it looks amazing. I didn't feel a pressure to tip. The guy carrying out the massage did mention it was a tip service, so I just gave him 100 lira (he continued wiping my face down with a towel after as I was sweating) and the guy manning the changing rooms I gave 50 lira. I purchased an orange juice on my way out and that was the same price as it is locally. It was a great experience, although I do want to try other hamams in the future.Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten August 4, 2024

I was charged for 1 hour treatment, instead I was only there for less than 40minutes. When complained to the receptionist, she said well it is more or less 1 hour. But in their brochure they advertise it as 15mins acrub, 30mins bubble wash and oil massage. I haven't even received any oil massage. The place is horribly kept, the staff are there to do just the bare minimum and have the courage to ask for tips on top. I do not recommend at all. I've already informed some travel book companies about the bad service. I definitey recommend the Cagaloglu Hamam, that is a 5 star service for just an extra £5-10.

Absolutely appalling value for money and service!
Booked in for a manicure and pedicure - the manicure lasted approximately 3 minutes and only consisted of cleaning up the cuticles. There was an additional charge for a hand massage and scrub (which I didn't opt for and was approximately 60tl).
The pedicure started off with a tub of water for the feet to soak in - again the pedicure consisted of neatening the cuticles only. There was an additional charge for 70tl for a scrub which I opted for. Only to find it was a type of lotion being applied and then scrubbed with a loafer.
It was my last day in Istanbul and just did not have the energy to bring this up for the management.
Overll extremely dissatisfied with the whole experience.

Located just behind the burned column is the entry way. It's 300 lira for a traditional which they give you (at least for a woman) throw away bottoms, soap and scrub mitt. Men and woman are separated but it is communal once inside your side. Between sweating and scrubbing you seriously have never been so clean, The quick but great massage is fantastic and the woman to does it all very professional. Upstairs do have mirrors and hairdryers to help you out and lockers to store your bag safely.

No reason why to visit:
There is no real massage, it’s just a tourist trap. You enter a very old and badly maintained building, you pay 40 euros for a scratch massage. It’s a dirty place, the massager will sweat on you.
There is nothing else than this huge stone shown in the bath website. So it’s not a bath house with jacuzzi or spa area.

I was recommended this place by the concierge at my hotel. I have to say that the overall experience was poor. I would say that it represents poor value for money considering that I paid 255 Turkish Lira for around 25 minutes in the baths. Considering that I had been very happy with all my other experiences on this visit to Istanbul, I clearly did not save the best until last. It felt rushed and like other reviewers have suggested the pressure to give a tip is considerable. I am certain that if you look around you will find much better places to enjoy a Turkish bath experience than here.

The best thing about this place is laying on the warm marble slabs when you enter. That really feels relaxing. Everything else is really poor service and not worth the premium price paid. I paid for a luxury bath and that was very lacklustre. The ladies that give the bath seem tired and not interested. I waited 30 minutes to get my "scrub". I was first called to move to the spot to get scrubbed but the lady poured water over me then went and scrubbed 2 other people who entered after be first. When she remembered to come back to me she gave me the slightest brush with the scrubbing cloth. after getting soaped up she guided me to the water basins and poured some water over me and asked if I wanted a shampoo and since I paid for the full experience I said yes. She then put some shampoo on my afro hair and quickly washed it out and lead me out of the hot room to my massage. I was wrapped in a towel and told to wait for my massage. I waited 10 minutes and then was given the massage which was ok but I was left dripping in oil. I wanted to go back in the hot room to relax but was told to go shower and change. I'd not pay for the scrub if I had to go again and just pay to go and lay on the hot slabs and wash myself. You do not get scrubbed with the wash and its not worth it.

To summarize my experience, all I can say is that not only it wasn't pleasant, it was a torture. I paid 55 euros for the luxury pack, hamam and massage. They gave me a towel and put me in the hamam, the woman who was supposed to take care of me, was not only bored to do her job, but also she was brutal. She threw several times hot water to my face and body with a metal basket, with such strength and without telling me first to be prepared that I thought my breath would stop. She did my body with the soap very fast and clumsy, and then spent about 1 minute washing my hair, with cold water. I felt helpless, like I was at a horror movie where they did tortures to make me talk! The oil massage was so mediocre, the woman was talking loudly with another employee the whole time, on my head. It was such a waste of money and time. It is November, my hair was wet and they didn't even had blow drier to dry my hair. Don't go, their service is ridiculous.

As a visiting tourist, this was my third Istanbul ham man and my least favorite. I would never recommend it. It is as far from a spa experience as you can get.
First the facilities: it reeked of cigarette smoke. The walls were visibly moldy. The seating area was crowded . The only shower stall had random grocery store shower gel for communal use. The central hot room had a dome and the basics but was covered with stains.
Second the service: it was rushed. The woman who scrubbed me down kept moving me around the stone slab to lay down to face other people’s feet. She had other women move up and down the slab while they were tying to relax. No idea why. We ended up walking around the whole round slab and lying down about 2 feet from where I started lying down. She was only in a bra and panties, and let her large belly constantly slap me. So strange; was that a new treatment I’ve never heard of? The wait between the scrub and the massage was long (my friend was in and out of her massage and had been waiting in the common area for 20 minutes by the time I started with mine). The line for the shower was another long wait. 8 women were ahead of me just to rinse off. The changing room had 4 people in a small space.
No COVID precautions at all. There were circles for social distancing on the floor in a couple areas but they guided multiple women into the same changing stall that I was in. No way we could stay even 1’ apart. I’m writing this with a sore throat two mornings later.

This is an authentic traditional hammam typical of the Middle East in a beautiful 16th century building. This is not a Hotel style beauty/spa treatment place which clearly some bad reviewers were expecting. If you are looking for that go somewhere else. This hammam is the place to go to get rubbed down, soaped up and massaged within an inch of your life in glorious surroundings. So forget the scented candles and canned music, this is a taste of a bygone age that is full of character and will leave you feeling like your body has had a good going over. Best sleep I’ve had in months after an afternoon here. Highly recommended but know what to expect.

We visited here at the suggestion of our wonderful tour guide but I really wish we hadn’t because it felt like a huge waste of money. We arrived in the evening and I booked a 30 minute foot massage for about 60 euros. which included use of the Turkish bath. I was the only customer on the ladies side and my massage lasted only 20 minutes. After that, the staff tried to shoo me out to change and leave. I said I wanted to visit the Turkish bath and they reluctantly agreed. I stayed in the bath area for all of 5 minutes before they came to shoo me out again. It seemed like the staff all wanted to go home even though the place was “open until 12AM.” There are plenty of places to experience a Turkish bath in Istanbul and there is absolutely no need to come here.

hi librarygirl, I want to know if the massage and bath are done in a common area with other people around or is it individual? and is the ladies section separate. Thanks
Written January 30, 2019
For men it is in the common area. Women are seperate but also in a common area. This is the tradition of hammam or Turkish bath.

Hi Jessica, we will be in Istanbul in a week and are curious what the other hammam you tried was and if you would recommend it instead? Thanks
Written May 30, 2018
Is it possible to enter the Hamam for a few minutes to do some photography of the architecture (central dome for men) without actually getting a bath there? Would I need to pay anything for this? What would be the cheapest option to get an entry anyway?
Written November 28, 2017
It might be quite difficult to take in a camera if you went as a regular customer - too much water around. The best thing is simply to ask. Good English is always spoken at reception. If you get an initial “no” simply offer some money - in this environment tips will buy a lot which is impossible when there is no compensation.

Hi there, I have never experienced a Turkish bath and would like to when we travel there next week. However I was wondering whether you can exclude the steam room and just have the rest, ie scrub, massage etc? Thanks in advance.
Written June 13, 2017
The steam's purpose is to get the skin ready for the scrubbing. So I would recommend you to not to skip it. Don't worry, inside is really not that hot or much steamy that you hardly see someone. Also right outside of the big chamber (steam room) there is another room where you can go out to take a breath and sit if you feel a little uncomfortable.
