Besides its importance as the first Turkish museum, it remains one of the world's largest museums with over one million works. Opened to the public in 1891, it houses a collection of Greek, Roman and Byzantine artifacts.

Being the cradle of 12 different civilizations a Turkish archeological museum is expected to be richer. So do not expect much though few examples of articrafts describe the past quite efficiently.

We came here because we bought the museum pass. However, we enjoyed the place. There is detailed explanation about Turkish history in the museum. Moreover, you can see great amount of historical stuff in an air-conditionered rooms.

As an amateur ancient history lover, I cannot describe my disappointment and frustration at turning up to find that - after 2 years of renovation 'work' that I couldn't see on my visit - the museum is still not showing it's greatest treasure, the Alexander...More

10 years ago I visited this museum, and I found it extremely interesting, at par with the great archaeological museums of the world. Then extensive restoration work was initiated, which also included anti-seismic provisions; most of the building was closed to the visitors and some...More

Next to the Topkapi Palace and included in the Museum Pass, most people have these three museums on their list of things to do but I found the experience well-worth avoiding. Much of the complex is closed for restoration, the "star" exhibit of Alexander's sarcophagus...More

Considering the long and rich history of Constantinople and Istanbul, the collection is not particularly impressive. May be a lot of the good things were already being moved to museums in other countries. Having said that, still worth a day's visit.

I'm a fan of museums but this one wasn't well organised. A lot of it was shut off. Very little information on each of the exhibits. Wouldn't bother going again.

The Museum is well organised into sections and by period, with information in both Turkish and English. Being interested in the Hittite period, I was delighted to find plenty of material from the Empire and Neo-Hittite periods. However, the highlight has to be the section...More

The museum is being renovated. While the museum is worth a visit, it could help travellers by adding a map of the museum, the collections, the rationale used to organize it this way.

With so many unmissable attractions within a mere
stroll of each other – and all set around the site of
an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an
overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a
prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly
epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the
Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this
relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to
