We booked 'Ultimate Istanbul Tour' for our family (2 adults + 2 teenagers) - 8 hours walking tour to visit major sites and historical places in the city. What we got, was a wonderful day spent wandering through rich history of the city, and the region, visiting all sites that were listed in the offer... But, thanks to our guide Iskender, we got lot more - we were privileged to reveal some hidden places, great viewpoints and feel the vibe of the city. Shortly - unforgettable day spent with very kind and professional guide...

We booked the Taste of Turkey on Two Continents (evening food tour) with this company. We are really happy to have book this tour to discover Istanbul food and culture. We were a really small group so it made the tour intimate and we have really enjoyed the time with our guide and the group. Our guide was passionate and took time to explain everything about food but also on local life and history. He was attention are to everyone in the group to ensure everyone had a good experience. Don’t expect to be hungry at the end as there is plenty of stops and food. We liked the mix between small tasting stop and a more formal/traditional restaurant by the end for the main meal. Was definitely more fun and interesting than sitting by ourselves into a restaurant. It is also great that this tour is over the two continents but not aim the touristy part of Istanbul (Fatih where is the Sultanahmet). There was a bit of walk and of course boat time but our guide was so interesting with stories and explanations that the evening pass extremely quickly. An other positive aspect is that even if the tour seem really well plan and organized, you feel the guide adjust the tour based on the group vibe and interests. This guide more à feeling of a night out with friends than being in a tour. We highly recommend the food tour we have done which exceeded our expectations.

Thank you for the lovely review. We believe the food taste better when you know the stories and the history behind is told. It is way more fun to see and discover the local parts of the city rather than the touristy part where the real part of the city is hidden from the tourists. We are glad to hear you enjoyed our accompany. We hope to see you travel with My Local Guide Istanbul again.

Hello! My friends and I had a 6 hour layover in Istanbul last week. We weren't sure if that was enough time to see Istanbul, but we definitely didn't want to sit around the airport and miss seeing such an amazing city. I reached out to "My Local Guide" and spoke to Salih. I explained to him our time restrictions and he came up with the perfect tour to fit into our layover. We were able to see some of the major highlights in Istanbul and Salih was very knowledgeable and fun. The transportation was very nice and the entire tour went very smoothly. Highly recommend! Our only regret is not having more time.

We had a wonderful few days with Salih...first day he picked us up from our Airbnb and took us round the major sites (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Hippodrome) followed by a nice lunch and the spice market. Next day he sorted a great boat trip up the Bosphorus and then lunch and a walk around the Grand Bazaar. Salih speaks excellent English and explains things very well, to adults and kids of all ages. His restaurant recommendations were very good and he looked after us well. Very happy to recommend him highly for your trip to Istanbul!

Amazing guide and amazing tour! If you are thinking about booking a culinary tour (or any tour), stop looking and book here. We never would have discovered so many hidden gem restaurants and markets in Istanbul on our own. Salih is a knowledgeable, thoughtful, and experienced guide. And, he’s fun! Our tour was a highlight of our time in Istanbul, and and we left very (very!) full.

Elif Oruc was introduced to us by Dilek as her replacement as Dilek could not join us. This was on 14th and 15th Sept 2023.
Elif took us to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the basilica cistern , the Grand Bazaar and the Spice market - She spoke good English, knew her history very well and had planned the route well too. Elif was patient with us stopping at odd places.
The following day we went to the Asian side and walked around the small streets, the Galata tower ,taskim and istikalal street. With Elif's guidance we used the public transport - tram and metro and the bosphorous ferry. We spent a memorable day with Elif.
I would recommend Elif to anyone looking for a private guide.

first of all, that popular pic of the street full of rainbow unbrellas belong to some outdoor restaurant and they charge you to get in and take pics. such a tourist trap.
the streets here are hilly like san fran. so if you're old or if it's raining, it's not the ideal place to go. there was only one street with the colorful houses. there was a all-boys greek orthodox highschool that was nice. but that was it.

Thank you for taking your time to write a review. And taking our attention to some “ interesting” points. Travelers’ advices shape the guides in a good way. 1. The popular umbrella street is in many parts of Istanbul. However, we have never market this in our tour details. The umbrellas belong to a restaurant and it is their personal choice to let people to take photos or not. 2. Yes Istanbul is a hilly city. Like San Fransisco ? We believe it is even way more. However, the hills we walk on are not that steep for those who like walking. Furthermore, this is a walking tour. 3. “ Only one street with colorful houses been visited “ ? On this tour we show about at least four street with colorful houses and that means you see over a hundred colored houses. We wish you had told us about seeing more of those houses than we would have shown even more. However, we believe that this amounts of houses is enough of seeing the same kind. 4. “ If you are old and can’t walk should not join this tour “ We are partly agree with you at this point. But let’s omit “ old “ part because we have many older guests who joined this tour and they had loved it which can be seen on the reviews. 5. Fener is a former Greek neighborhood and they have a lot of history about the neighborhood so we must talk about this. Otherwise it won’t be fair to Greeks. Sorry if you didn’t enjoy about that. It was a pleasure for our guide to hold your arm at the entire tour to save you from falling down on the cobble stones but it is recommended to wear non slippery shoes, and bring an umbrella when joining to a walking tour on a rainy day.

Having been on several culinary tours, I would say that there is very poor value for the 85 euro price. A quick walk through the local market had only one sampling stop, then a light dinner, then dessert, then a water pipe with a beverage. The guide may have had an off night based on the positive reviews, but he was generally quiet and/or on his phone and didn't share as much about the food, history, and environment as we would have expected. He was generally pleasant and did warm up as the night wore on.

As an example, the second culinary tour we took in Istanbul cost only a small amount more, and we were offered such a large variety and quantity of food, the group was turning down stops toward the end. This was paired with a wealth of information along the way.

Thank you for taking your time to write a review for My Local Guide Istanbul. We are sorry that you were not satisfied with our service. My name is Salih and I'm the company owner. I designed this food tour and I'm the only guide for this specific tour since 2012 so, I was the guide for your tour. This is our first negative review after three years and so I'm trying to address your feedback and also look at ways to improve our customers' expectations. I understand that you have compared our tour with a culinary tour, but our tour is not a back street culinary tour where you walk and have 10-15 food breaks. That is a different concept to our tour. Ours is promoted as "a progressive dinner on two continents". We have made it very clear in our website that we stop four times: 1. We start with a platter of 8 different samples of local produce at the food market in Asia ( three kinds of cheeses, pastrami, smoked beef, stuffed muscles, dried fruits, halva and olives) 2. We then follow to a reputable restaurant where we start with a meze plate with 6 different mezes ( appetizers ), this follow by 4 different main courses. When group is bigger this can rise to more dishes. A complimentary glass of wine or beer is offered also, alongside non-alcoholic options. 3. Then we go back to the European side where we have two different kinds of Baklava and ice cream. 4. After this we go to a cafe where we smoke Nargile and have some non-alcoholic drinks. This itinerary is based on a traditional Turkish meal and night out that we have with friends, but we added a twist for international guests - that is the meal is a progressive dinner on two continents - we are the first tour company to do this. So our tour is more a dinner with a local friend, taking you to local places and socializing with locals accompanied by a local guide who is willing to answer all questions through the night. The culinary tour you refer to is not based on this social and eating tradition. It is different. We will try to make this clearer in our promotions. What I'm understanding from your review is that you didn't find that there was enough food breaks and that there wasn't enough food. I always ask my clients if they want more food - and this is something I never forget to ask - that is Turkish hospitality to never have a guest go hungry. We don't have a limit with the food on this tour. We don't push people to eat too much but always make sure there is enough food offered. Before I was a guide I worked in the food sector for eight years and I have travelled throughout Turkey and tasted and learned about many cuisines. In every tour I share the stories and the information about the food with all clients. So the tour is not only eating but you get informed about Turkish cuisine and culture. I've never had negative feedback about the information I give. My apologies, if this aspect of the tour let you down. Lastly, you mention the use of my mobile. I use my mobile in this tour 2-3 times. The first time is when we are on the ferry going to the Asian side. I call the family in the food market to prepare us a fresh platter. Then I call the baklava place to save us a table as you can not book ahead for this but if you call 20- 30 minutes before you arrive then they can save us a table. I do this so we don't have to wait. Finally I call the Nargile cafe before I arrive to save us a nice spot. I also may use my mobile to call a taxi when clients need one to get back to hotel. So the tour can't work well without use of a mobile. And I think in a 6 hour tour being on the phone to organize things to make the tour run smoothly is required for my guests. We are happy to offer you another tour on your next visit to Istanbul and hope your experience is worthy of an excellent review like 99% of our guests. Thank you again for taking the time to write - we trust our response clears up the comments you had and the concerns of future clients reading your review.

Our wonderful experiences in Istanbul, away from the 'tourist center', were made possible by our walking guide, Fatma!
Fatma was responsible, personable, flexible, and knowledgeable.
My husband and I highly recommend her!
Even if this is not your first trip to Fatma's country, you will benefit from her insights.

The previous reviews suggests a personalised local tour of Istanbul which is above the standard group tour. Whilst the personalised nature of the tour and localization is true, it is not outstanding as to be expected. Information provided are no different from a guide book and in some cases, I find guide books and other tour guides providing more insights. There is a lot of walking around the back alleys which is alright but can get a bit disorientating. We took both the tour secrets tour and the heritage tour. The heritage tour is a let down. So if you like a personal 'friend' as a guide this ok but don't expect your 'friend' to be too knowledgeable.
