About
The Historical Ağa hamamı was constructed by Fatih Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror (the 7th Ottoman Padishah). Ağa Hamamı was used as a private hamam by Mehmed the Conqueror and his sons. At that time, Beyoglu District was not a settlement area and the Padishahs would come to Beyoglu District for hunting. Mehmed the Conqueror constructed this building as a hunting house in 1454. Ağa hamamı was designed as a hamam below the two flats above. It underwent a large-scale renovation in 1844 by Abdulmecid (the 31st Ottoman Padishah). It was used by the Padishahs and their sons until the final years of the Ottoman Empire.

Neighborhood: Beyoglu
Istanbul’s most famous street, pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), throbs day and night and offers a fantastic array of architectural sights, shops, treats, and throngs upon teeming throngs of people. At the avenue’s northeastern end is expansive Taksim Square, thought by many to be the very heart of the city, with many of Turkey’s most renowned restaurants and some of Europe’s most happening nightlife in close proximity. In striking contrast, Beyoglu’s less trafficked areas – such as the affluent Cihangir and the antiques district of Cukurcuma – exude Old World charm and provide contemplative calm and splendid diversion via an assortment of cozy cafes, attractive boutiques, and quiet lanes.

I come here once a year...
...and it somehow improves every time. The building vibrates with history, the natural light that fills the hamam adds calm, and the scrubbing/soap treatment is the most pampering experience ever. Topped off with Turkish tea and sherbet on reclining loungers. Truly wonderful.

    Authentic and relaxing hamam experience
I visited Aga Hamami in September 2023 with a friend. We booked the top package with a body scrub, massage, and facial. The staff were wonderful and welcoming and the manager explained the whole experience carefully before starting which was very helpful. The building and facilities were beautiful, historical and well maintained as well as spotlessly clean. We got to use the hamam and sauna just the two of us for around 20 minutes until another mixed gender group joined us. The scrub and foam bath were in a private room with the massage and facial taking place upstairs in another private treatment room. The staff had limited English (front of house staff were fluent) but all staff very friendly and professional. What a relaxing experience, I felt like a new person after! We even got to keep the scrubbing mits so we can try to replicate the experience at home. Highly recommend for anyone who hasn’t tried a Hamam experience! Just a warning-hydrate well before and after, it’s hot in the hamam room which is part of the experience (rest of the building air conditioned).

    Pleasant afternoon
We spent a lovely afternoon at Aga Hamam. It was our first time in a Turkish Hamam and we are very pleased with the experience. We chose to come here because couples were allowed and we are on our honeymoon :) We were first surprised that the dressing rooms are also right in the entrance hall but the rest of the hamam is quite nice and relaxing. The time in the "warm room" was nice but we weren't always sure what to do with the water/soap/sauna/... The people taking care of us afterwards were really amazing! The women who scrubbed and foamed was really sweet (couldn't speak english nor I turkish but it worked out fine). Men and women are in separate room for that part. The massage was really nice too and I LOVED the Ottoman Sherbet at the end. Thank you!

    Favourite Hamam in Istanbul
I've been several times now to Aga Hamami, every time I visit Istanbul I try to fit it in. The reception are very friendly and helpful and this time even gave us some free soap to take home when my girlfriend mentioned how much she liked it. The hamam itself is very old style and very well kept. The standard package gives you 30 mins in the hamam and then about 15-20 mins body scrub and wash. I would recommend a visit to anyone visiting Istanbul, especially after a long day of sightseeing and walking around the city - it was exactly what we needed after our first day, a nice relaxing end and the feeling of being totally clean afterwards. See you next visit in Istanbul! Çok teşekkür ederim Aga Hamami!

    Highly recommended with modesty intact!
Really wanted to do a Turkish bath but didn’t want to be naked. Aga Hamami gives you a choice to keep your bikini top/bottom/both on. The experience was so relaxing - from the sauna (mixed male and female and you get a light towel to wrap around you) to the scrub (where this is separated into male/female) and the heavenly scented wash and finally the bubbles and a sit down hair wash while having water poured on you to wash you down. Then you get to relax in a lounger with fresh towels with water or tea and a cold drink and Turkish delight. Try to have time to be able to enjoy the pampering. What a totally awesome experience and would totally recommend. The staff were very friendly and managed to slot me in with no notice as I was on my own but suggest you book. Be prepared to get hot and sweaty in the sauna and mindful of others as it’s a quiet zone. Cash only - no credit card accepted but ATMs within 5 min walk.

A great experience in a traditional hamam
My daughter and I went to this Hamam and we had a great experience. The steam room was for both men and women but it felt very comfortable as there were different alcoves where you could sit and there were only 1 to 2 other people there. The scrub was in a women only room and it was divine. More relaxing than I expected. I would go regularly if I could! The building was beautiful and felt like a step back in time.

Only white western people are allowed, they refused to let me in making excuses that it's for couples only. I asked a customer, who was western, that just finished if he is with his couple he said no. Racist place, don't go, don't support racism.

Nothing fancy nor shinny or exclusive! This is the main remark in my review. We had a booking for one day earlier but staff was kind to allow us to postpone due to unforseen activities we did on first day. Very polity very professional.

Next day we went at appointment time and greeted in good English and we were immediately given a small room we changed and left our stuff for storage. That was ok.
We were taken to hammam main room where we immediately found 6 men(half nacked of course)I was with my girlfriend so felt a bit wierd. However, after few minutes some men left some ladies come in so we understood it was “just our bad experience” . However, when scrubing and washing starts ladies are taken in ladies washroom and washed by women, men by men. They let you stay approx 30min in hammam and wash yourself or use sauna and after that you get washed for 15-20mins.
Then you are taken to floor up, where u can relax, until they call you for another 15-20min oil massage and put a face mask on you.
You are sent to “relax” again but no one was comming to take us for mask cleaning!! Eventually, we were told that we had to wash it ourself.
Place is antique and as history museum must have great value. Also, I would say that is nice as experience , but just two days ago we had similar treatment in Eforea Spa in Hilton Bomonti and it was different and very classy experience. More expensive of course but it would be pitty to compare.
I would recommend as experience, but if you adore cleanliness dont.

Clearly racist attitudes towards people of darker skin color.
My friend and I went in to this place and saw many single men (men without woman accompanying them) in the place. The staff told us that we are not welcome without women with us ("families or mixed gender couples"). We asked the 2 (european looking) guys leaving as we were walking in and they told us this is not true and they were in and used the place with no women accompanying them. Everyone we say in the place seemed white/European.
The attitude towards us was clearly based on our middle eastern skin color.
awful experience.

I went with my gf and her sister back on 27/03/2020 and had the 'Massage Package' which includes the the foam bath and oil massage.

The experience was not only great but fully professional, by the time you finish you'll be very very relaxed, they definitely know what they're doing. Even the tea is good!

Bonus? There's a nice kitty roaming around the place. What else can you ask for?

A really wonderful experience - we went for the massage package and enjoyed a couple of hours of true pampering in a lovely yet unpretentious and historic environment. Will definitely come back! I saw someone commenting on the stairs - they are quite steep, but not slippery and if you hold on they shouldn’t be a problem at all.

We were there with my son and my husband. And I share our family experience. The place is very nice and it is very easy to find. But it is very important to book the time, because the are usually well booked. We were on time and the host explained us what to do. We wet to Hamam and it is very good inside. Clean and nice smell. After they divided me with my boys and I had scrub and oil-massage, It was really good! I was clean and relaxed. Then we took our time to relax. My husband’s opinion was that Turkish Hamam is for women. He for himself liked the Georgian bath more. As for me I enjoyed. So, I would suggest you to go to Turkish Hamam if you have chance to!

Unfortunately overall disappointing experience. Fantastic ambience and professional reception. But that's it. The masseurs simply do a half-hearted job. That's a shame. The facial treatment I booked was a joke. Simply smear cream on your face. You can then wash them off yourself. I have been to many hamam. That was by far the weakest performance. A classic tourist spot. It's a real shame for this incredibly beautiful traditional hamami. The staff should try harder to do justice to this historic place.
