Istanbul is famous for its tolerant Muslim culture that has welcomed people of all religions. Whether called Constantinople or Istanbul this city has been amazingly diverse for over 2500 years. Only in the last 15 years or so has antisemitism lead to a rapid decline of the Jewish population. On this tour you will visit the Jewish quarter, enter synagogues... More

We scheduled this private tour for the morning of our third day in Istanbul. Our guide and driver were great and picked us up promptly at our hotel. We were able to visit the interiors of both the Ashkenazi Synagogue, and the Ahrida Synagogue. Neve Shalom, the Zulfaris Synagogue and the Jewish Museum were all closed although we were able... We did this tour on our first day of a four day visit to Istanbul. As has been mentioned, before, Alp, although not Jewish is very knowledgeable about the Jewish culture, religious services, and Jewish society. As well as touring the synagogues, and even attending part of the morning service, Alp was able to give us insights in planning our... More

Very well organized tour, pick-up (with luggage) very efficient. Visit to Synagogues and Museums very interesting and informative. Great guide (Tily) - offered insight into past and present life of Jewish people in Istanbul. We enjoyed the stop at the bakery for tea and pastry. In our opinion this was a tour well worth the time - operated by very... More

We took the half day morning Jewish heritage tour of Istanbul on September 9th after having travelled in Turkey for 17 days. Our guide, Alp was superb. Knowlegable, pleasant, extremely well-informed. He grew up in the Balat neighborhood and took us to an amazing bakery as well as several synagogues and the Jewish Museum.I highly recommend this company and this... More

Firstly, the booking was simple, efficent and effective over the internet although it was extra for a Jewish guide. We were picked up promptly by her and her driver and way we went. It was worth every euro having her...she embodied Jewish life now in Turkey.. Highly educated and skilled, she took us to all the synagoguesand sights with a... More

We were coming to Istanbul and I realized that we had forgotten to include a Jewish heritage tour as part of our visit to this wonderful city. I contacted Istanbul Life Jewish Heritage Tours and after a few emails and a very easy payment process we were all set to go later that same week. Alp was our guide who... More

Our guide, Alp, was exceptional! He picked us up promptly at our hotel and we were off to discover our Jewish roots in Istanbul. We visited several synagogues, cultural museum, old Jewish quarter among sites and had delightful coffee break with delicious pastries. Not to be missed by those interested in finding Jewish culture in Istanbul. Great half day!

Can't say enough good things about our half day tour of the Jewish community. Saw three synagogues, the neighborhood of the first Sephardic immigrants from Spain, and enjoyed the Jewish museum as well. Our guide, Alp, was super knowledgeable and really helped us understand the community, its challenges and the color and flavor of Jewish history in Turkey. Highly recommend... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighborhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
