The Historical and Luxurious Art of BathingHistorical and Architectural Features“I hope that until the end of days, good hearted friends who take a look at what I have made, when they will perceive the seriousness and the spirit of my effort, can have a fair view and can invoke my name to pray for me.” Mimar Sinan, ArchitectThe Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamam in Istanbul was designed and built by Mimar Sinan, the chief Ottoman architect. It was built at the request of Hurrem Sultan (Roxelana), the wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century. It was built where the ancient public baths of Zeuxippus used to stand, between the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. The area is also particularly significant as the site where the Temple of Zeus once stood.

Travel through time by visiting this amazing site, learning about it's transition from its Christian roots to Muslim and then museum status. So rich and beautiful - definitely worth a visit to every "corner" of it. Take your time and walk through each area, including the winding stone staircase if you can manage it.

Slightly apprehensive about the experience but my attendant/masseuse put me at ease and had good chat. The cleansing process was something I'd never experienced before but the scrub and bubble wash were amazing! All in the pristine marble hamam. Then the oil massage - I opted for the hard pressure and it was brilliant - even had the masseuse walking... More

I was very reluctant to try the Turkish Hamam but I am so glad that I did ., I booked in advance after sending them an email with all my concerns considering that I went with my 9 years old daughter but they replied to me on the same day answering all my questions and she really enjoyed her Hammam... Although it might be a little bit different from ordinary hamams in the midtown with cheeper prices, modern and sophisticated services can be given here. The 50 minutes course was enough for amazing experience (maybe it was more than 1 hour including rest time and tea time).

my last day in Istanbul, it was recommended I try the Hamamatsu experience. Upon arriving, I was greeted warmly by the staff and made to feel very comfortable. The facility was store, sly clean, the staff attentive and the experience everything promised. Give it a try.

I've never before had a Turkish bath. Wish I could do it regularly. The facility is lovely. The person who bathed and massaged me was wonderful, attentive, strong - just perfect. I decided to treat myself at the end of a long and exhausting day of sight seeing and it was just heavenly. I did the bath and massage. I... More

I am used to Hamams all over the world... And this one which should be one of the best, due to its reputation... I find it Very expensive for the average service you receive. Just the minimum provided After the Hamam your skin is very dry, you can't even buy oil!!!! As they don't even provide or propose it... So,... More

Unbelievably disappointed with massage and bare minimum scrub. Poor return on expense. Would not go again!

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighborhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
