About Culinary Backstreets -Tours
When it comes to exploring a city’s authentic dining scene, while the stomach should ideally serve as the best compass, the truth of the matter is that it’s hard to find your way without good local advice. That’s where Culinary Backstreets’ Culinary Walks come in. In order to help you explore the world’s gastro-capitals and get off these cities’ eaten path, CB is offering (with selected partners) guided culinary walks in some of the cities we cover, starting with Istanbul, Athens, Barcelona, and Shanghai. Our culinary walks are designed to lead visitors on an eating binge through a city’s lesser-seen historic side streets and authentic markets, taking in countless hard-to-find culinary gems and, in between bites, a select number of untouristed monuments. You can view our updated safety measures at https://culinarybackstreets.com/our-commitment/

What an absolutely delightful way to spend a day in Istanbul. Ugur was fantastic with a wonderful personality. The quaint local eateries we visited gave us a whole different perspective. Ugur is passionate about his city and through discussions about the local cuisine he interspersed historical, cultural and socio-political insights that elevated the whole experience.

We had an extensive walk and could try a variety of Turkush delicacies. Some shops we might have been able to spot ourselves, most of them not. As foodtravellers we really enjoyed and appreciated Ugurs competence and attention to detail as well as his ability to handle a very diverse group. We already chose the next tour we will attend if coming to Istanbul again.

We spent a fabulous day exploring the Bazaar Quarter in Istanbul with Ugar! Not only did we enjoy food (lots and lots of it ... not dinky samples by any stretch of the imagination... embarrassing how much was left over even after eating way too much at each place), but we also explored hidden corners and saw parts of life that one does not often see. For example: we saw Armenian silversmiths hand hammering large bowls, and another craftsman who was hand-etching an incense container to be used during holy services. We wandered through just a small part of the Grand Bazaar and on the fringes of the Spice Bazaar, hearing about what and where to buy, foods or other items to consider and about life for the Istanbulis of today. Yes, it is more expensive than many other trips ... but it is well worth it! So much so, that we went online and made reservations for a second trip with CB the evening of our Bazaar Quarter exploration.

My second tour with Culinary Backstreets and like the first, it was amazing. We ate so many delicious things on both sides of the Bosporus and our guide, Uğur was outstanding. This tour is an excellent way to start off a trip to Istanbul. I learned so much about the food, the culture, and even the transportation system. Highly recommended.
