Did a cruise on the Bosphorus Strait, great scenery along the shore and we had great weather on the day. A great way to view the mosques and the fortresses.

it makes you feel so little...and at night it is really something you won't forget easily. Boats at any time sailing back and fot=rth the european, the asian and the "old" Istanbul....

We took the cheap local ferry up in the am, hiked up to the ruins at the top - what a view! - then had lunch at an incredible restaurant dockside (wish I could remember the name!) Rather than take the ferry back, though, we took a local bus back down the Asian side at the suggestion of our landlord.... More

A relaxing way to spend a half day is to take a cruise. We enjoyed having a guide. It was more expensive than a ferry but was simpler as we were picked up at hotel. If we had ;more time we would have liked to explore further with ferries.

What a perfect way to capture all the beautiful sights of the city, but in cooler months be sure to wrap up warmly!

Was disappointed as I expected a lot more from the cruise. It was pretty standard one but you get to see the Asian and European sides. And they never take you till Black Sea :(

This is one of the main reasons for the unique character of Istanbul from the enormous cargo ships making their way into and out of the Black Sea to the busy ferries plying their way across it. I could just sit all afternoon with this view in front!

The full day trip along the Bosphorus is well worth it. You buy your tickets at the booth on the old city side of Istanbul and hop on the ship for a 10:30 to 4:30 trip, with a three hour stopover at the mouth of the Black sea. The shores of the Bosphorous are lined with beautiful homes and palaces,... More

The cruise on Bosphorous may not be much different from a local river cruise, for example in the backwaters of Kerala or a boat ride to St. Mary's Island in Udupi, except for the hundreds of historical monuments dotted through the banks on both sides from 12th century to 21st century.... If you have a good guide, its a nice... More

We explored Istanbul with the help of a friend who had been there many times. He recommended that, instead of taking an expensive, tourist-oriented cruise, we take the local ferry and see the same sights for the grand total of $1.00. Actually, we took two ferries, one to the Asian side of the Bosphorous, and another back. We went at... More

Staying in Besiktas

Neighborhood Profile
Besiktas
In Besiktas, skyscrapers compete with palaces for space in an upscale vista replete with hilly green parkland filling in the margins. Step into this rather wealthy neighborhood and discover a rich mix of opportunities to shop, dine, and be entertained. For folks in search of urban buzz, not to mention a constant reminder of just how important Istanbul’s waterways are to its rich history, there's the frenetic Besiktas ferry terminal or the city’s most vibrant fish market to explore. For a timeout of metropolitan proportions, head to the bucolic Yildiz Park or the chic Bosphorus-side fishing village of Ortakoy. Attractions such as the grandiose Dolmabahce Palace and a bevy of other stately residences await admiration. To be sure, this large and not overly touristy swath of Istanbul yields plenty of pleasure for all.
