The area

Neighborhood: Fener & Balat

This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.

A local gem for kebap and local products

It is not your usual socially and literally hygienic place. It is the very local one with many options to eat kebab or find local cheese (and also honey etc) products that come from all over Turkey but mostly from the Eastern parts. Most of the shop owners are from Siirt. Some or most of them are Ethnically Arab but Turkish citizens. It is more or less a rectangular space. In the old days, there were butchers in the middle of this space. It is now a green space. Allegedly, there are Roman ruins under the green space. A particular kebap type, Büryan is especially famous here. Besides, intense dessert types can be found.

Very local bazaar

You can find this bazaar just under the aquaduct. I should have bought something here, for I've already bought dried fruit and soap at another shop.... You can find some products of East Anatoria here. Just looking around is enough to give you the real local Istanbul!! The staff do not speak English well, so you need to make yourself understood in Turkish when necessary.

Experience the culture of the neighborhoods

The best way to see Istanbul is on a scooter, driven by an experienced driver with a wealth of information about the history and architecture. Buzzing through the narrow streets, old neighborhoods, and tourist sites, we were able to see most of Istanbul in a day and learned a lot along the way. One of the most interesting and fun days ever!
