The Russian Bazaar is located on Azadi Street. We walked here to get lunch after strolling through the many parks nearby, which included monuments to Lenin and Pushkin. There were many f&b options, including meat wraps, kebabs and hamburgers. After lunch we sampled a few items of pastry which were on display at the bakery area. The stalls were very clean and well organised, and included displays of clothing, food and many other items. This is another of the many areas in Ashgabat where photos are restricted, but we were not aware and took a few from the upper level and outside.

The shopping area extends all the way around the building, as there were quite a few temporary stalls set up. This is a great place to shop, eat and get a feel for local culture. If you continue in a westerly direction on Azadi Street, the Teke Bazaar will come into view after passing through the Square of Inspiration. Other nearby attractions include Magtymguly Park which is a short walk north, and the many parks which are in an easterly direction, including Ashgabat Park, Ataturk Park, Lenin Park and Pushkin Park. It is probably best to take a bus to the town center, then walk to the bazaar.

The market is divided in different sections like fruits, fish, flowers, clothes etc.

We stopped there around noon and it was a good place for a quick and cheap lunch. Baklava was delicious and there are also several Kebap stalls and Cafés available.

Plan around 1 hour to see everything and to have a quick bitte.

Market selling food and some tourist souvenirs. Not particularly impressive if you compare the place with other bazaars around Central Asia. Also difficult to take photos as they had bad publicity from one irresponsible Italian tourist who has spoiled the photo opportunity for everyone else.

Unless you are really trying to kill a hour or two, I wouldn’t consider this place to be on the priority list. Devote your time enjoying the unusual but intriguing architecture making this city so beautiful as well as the carpet outlets, selling some magnificient works of art!

This Russian Bazaar is on the "tour" IF you are anxious to view a bazaar; there is nothing especially different about it from other markets in central asia; one is allowed to take photos but many don't want them taken. In Almaty, Kazakstan, they didn't allow any photos to be taken - so this is not a unique situation. The ground floor is the food area with stalls representing all variety of foods, spices, etc. It is very clean and from that standpoint is different from many markets in the Middle East.

Our visit to this market was a disappointment. Prices were high, there was little variety and you are not permitted to take photos. We want a market to excite us and this one was boring!

Cute stuff to buy, but also a really good place to exchange your euro’s/dollars to Manat. In May 2019 iT was supposed to be 1 euro to 19 Manat (where they normally charge you 1 euro to 4 Manat at The bank).

Before independence the main population living near the market were Russians with only few Turkmen families there (less than 5%) thus at that time it was mainly frequented by Russians, hence the name Russian market/bazaar. The Russians left, the name remained.

The market comprises of the big roofed hall where on the ground floor vegetables, fruits, spices, dried fruits, nuts, honey, fish, caviar, etc. are sold. Vendors do not like if photos are taken. On the second floor are mostly shops with cloths.

Outside the hall numerous shops selling everything from adaptors to cell phones, and of course Turkmen souvenirs such as socks, fur hats, carpets, etc. Interesting to walk around for about 1 hour but nothing spectacular. Several Cafes offer cheap, good food and drinks.

When we visited this bazaar – quite early in the morning on a weekday – it appeared half-empty. The stalls were all open, but there were few customers. I still wonder if this was due to the time, or some other reason.
However this didn't stop us from enjoying the visit. To appreciate, for example, the vertical skewer of the doner kebab patiently loaded by hand with small pieces of meat, instead of with gigantic pre-packaged pieces, as normally happens in Western Europe; or the food shops which prominently offer - among other things - large quantities of caviar from the "Russian Sea" (this is evidently what the Caspian Sea is called; I bought a jar of it), or the stalls which offer incredible varieties of herbs dried for infusions.
All in all, it's worth a look.

Another must see in Ashgabat. This market is a lively center of commerce and gossip exchange. Wander through the aisles and stalls where you can sample caviar, candied melon and fresh fruits or vegetables.

It is a shopping center Gulistan, well known in Ashgabat and located in the center of the city. An unofficial but popular name is Russian Bazaar.
I bought magnets here :)
