This is the place where the president of Sri Lanka address on the Independence day. It is open on all days. The is also a museum which is currently closed due to covid. The entrance fee is free for all but I think there is a fee to enter the museum.

A short visit is sufficient to view a moment of history. The square was built by the first prime minister after Sri Lanka’s independence on 5 February 1948.

Love the carvings on the pillars depicting Buddhism and also Sri Lankan culture. And the ceilings are filled with beautiful paintings.

Place to relax and learn about the culture a bit. Tourist thing you must try, get a guide who can be helpful in narrating the story

You have to know the history if not it is just a hall giving you some shade from the sun. Nice surroundings . Good space.

Interesting memorial, offers some good photo opportunities. Its an important monument to the Sri Lankan people, and in spite of it being busy, the atmosphere was respectful, and a peaceful place to be in a very busy city. Its worth stopping for, but 20 minutes will be enough time for your visit.

Independence Memorial Hall is a national monument in Sri Lanka was built in 1948 to commemorate independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule. It is located at the Independence Square in the Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo. At the head of the monument is the statue of the first prime minister of the country Rt. Honorable Don Stephen Senanayake, who is the Father of the Nation of the country. The beautiful stone carvings in the columns and the walls of the Hall, which represent the great architectures of the Hall and attract the attention of tourists and local peoples. It’s a very nice and cool place to visit in Colombo.

One of the safest places I had walked/ran at any given time thanks to the Military presence and the odd policemen around. The Arcade guards are weird and stare all the time and treat you like a thief about to rob, the military always smile and so do the policemen. One small cafe for a bite to eat and drink, in case you ran too fast and was getting dizzy :) The paths are getting a little uneven with the paved bricks shifting but for a few years it would still be great.

A great place to walk, sit, run, eat, read, study and for many other things. The well maintained lawns by Sri Lanka Army and the ease of access to many main roads from this greenery are two main attractions here. The monument here is ideal for photo shoots and so s the surroundings. The man-made paths around the memorial hall get crowded in the evenings by kids on scooters, skates and bicycles and adults who are jogging. Many students roam in here on weekends. The water garden overlooking the hall is also awesome. There's a restaurant nearby that contains all food and drinks. The hoppers there at evening are the best. The food is not expensive and you will find a multitude of drinks from tonic to organic.

On Saturdays, there's the Good Market in the close proximity (next to CR & FC grounds) where you will find every kind of goods such as artwork, organic food, handicrafts and many more.

The last time we went, there were a bunch of Labradors there playing next to the Independence monument which means animals are allowed here. It's a place I like to visit every weekend for all my visits to here so far have not caused any dismay.

The hall itself does not have much to offer. It's just a large empty hall. The Independence square, however, has a lot to offer apart from the Independence hall. You can take a stroll in the garden in front of the hall and can shop at the shopping complex adjacent to the hall.

The hall is used to celebrate independence day of Sri Lanka every year and other state ceremonies. When we went there, a monk was protesting inside the hall, probably against Sri Lanka taking aids from the USA. Because of that there was a lot of police there. Although when we asked if we can take pictures, they gladly allowed us.

In the hall alone, do not expect to spend more than 15 minutes.
