Mount Lavinia Beach is located just out of the Colombo city. This beach strip has a lot to offer for the locals as well as the tourists visiting Colombo. Along the beach there are many nice restaurants pubs as well as relaxing areas. As a tourist who is visiting Colombo, Mount Lavinia Beach is a must visit. The weekends could be crowded with locals though, during the week it is relaxing and peaceful. If you would relax at a pool overlooking the ocean or the sunset, The Mount Lavinia Hotel terrace is recommended. You can use the Mount Lavinia Hotel pool for an affordable fee.

Mount Lavinia is a great spot to stay if you do not want to stay in the heart of Colombo. The beach is clean, huge and has many places to grab a beer or food. The local train station is nearby and you can simply pop into Colombo (20-30 mins) for a ridiculously cheap fare. I stayed here on arrival... More

Not very crowded, Not very lonely... It was too far from Kollupitiya.. It was a very clean beach but too remote from heart of city.. But it was worth the travelling time.. It was also extremely difficult to get a tuk-tuk back to our hotel near Kollupitiya...

Crowded beach semi polluted. Close to Colombo. Nice for morning or evening stroll. Need to be carefully about petty thieves.

Unsafe beach with strong undercurrents. Not particularly clean. Try to travel down south for a fun beach experience.

Just had a one night stay at Mount Lavinia Hotel Colombo at the end of a 14 night driving tour of Sri Lanka. I had stayed at Mt Lavinia in the 70's and wanted to return. The hotel was built in the 18th century so had colonial charm but has beautiful pool overlooking the Indian Ocean. Great buffet and staff.
