St Michael and All Angels Church, Polwatte was dedicated on the 29th of September 1887 and is a landmark in Kollupitiya, a suburb of Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. A magnificent building of stone, mortar and wood, it stands as a testimony to its rich history of prayer, worship and mission.

Nice church located in Colombo. Built in 1887 with stone, mortar and wood. My cousins got married in this church.

We went to the noon mass which is the spoken Mass. There is an English sung Mass at 6:30 am but we are slugs and can't roll out of the rack that early. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming and helpful. They have real candles that you can light for a special prayer. The organist is very good and the hymns are printed on a sheet which you will be handed when you enter the church. You can get there by tuk-tuk. In our case the driver waited for us and took us back to the hotel and the fare was almost nothing.

Well worth a visit. Lots of history (unfortunately too lengthy to go into here). Services are somewhat 'high-church". An organ is available for the provision of music. The Prime Minister's official residence is close by. There is a secluded walkway from near the church to the Beira Lake, which is not known to many but is worth a visit. Many well patronised shops, banks, restaurants, cinemas etc in close proximity. The parishioners think of the locality 'Polwatte' as the village.

Historical and Prestigious Building more than 100 years old. Located in Colombo city, and respected by many catholics /chirstians. Beautifully constructed using granites during the colonial rule but still ingood shape.

St Michael is the Anglican church which serves the most prominent residential districts of Colombo (3 and 7) and is located near "Temple Trees", residence of either the President or Prime Minister. It has been endowed over the years by some of Colombo's best known Anglican families.

An oasis of calm in the city, particularly the "Lady chapel".

The Bishop of Colombo and Archdeacon of Colombo have usually served as the vicar here.

Travellers looking for a taste of authentic SriLanka can make the walk or ride to the historic Galle Face Green. On Sundays this is a gathering point for families to meet, eat and play. There are plenty of street food vendors so try a new SriLankan taste. Listen to music or just enjoy the scene.
