The Sri Lanka navy has got a ssmall ship to take visitors safely out into sea to see these magnificent mamals. Booking are made via internet. We saw a lot of whales , mostly blue whales. The trip took us 3 hours to get to the whales. Fortunately the weather was very good. The staff respected the whales and kept their distance. We could make beautiful pictures.

We did see two whales, but didn't get as long as we though out on the boat. It can be bumpy, so try and prepare yourself if you are susceptible to seasickness. Of the two whales we saw, one was asleep at the surface, and one dived and showed us the lovely tail fluke. Worth going if you haven't seen a whale before, but it could be cheaper or slightly longer to make it better value.

Well organised and very professional team. Weather dependent. Staff are very good at rearranging bookings to suit - though sometimes this is not always possible.

The Blue whale is certainly a majestic creature of the sea. The day began early when you are loaded onto one of about 10 boats that set off from Mirissa. The boats travel a few kilometres out to see and then search for Blue whales. When one surfaces there is a mad dash by the boats to get into what they believe is the best position to see the whale surface again. Unfortunately they are usually wrong and the whale surfaces elsewhere so there is another mad dash by the boats to get into the best position. I have seen Sperm whales in New Zealand and when they surface they breech the water and then dive deep to search for food. The Blue whales are travelling below the surface searching for food so when they come to the surface only their air hole and back break the water surface so you don't get to see much of the whale. I did not feel cheated although the boat I was on was the first to return to port. I do worry that the boats get too close to the animals and might be causing the whale some stress. However, because of the haphazard surfacing I think the whale was probably playing tricks on us!

We went with Rajah n the whales at mirissa . Free flowing food from start to finish, whole morning trip. We saw turtles blue whales and dolphins. Go with rajah n the whales its a bit expensive but well worth your money as the boat would go find its whale away from the other boats, and youll see more whales than in those other operators, we saw 4blue whales and even saw the whale poop. Awesome trip.
