    Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct
This is in the old Dutch Hospital the oldest building in Colombo in the Colombo Fort area. It was built as a hospital for the Dutch in 1681 to look after the officers and other staff of the Dutch East India Company. It was transformed into a shopping and dining precinct and the historic architecture has been preserved. At least I could get a decent feed as had KFC and Burger King and dining otherwise very expensive and tax added too

Atmosphere is good, not much to explore
The place is hyped. Old building with maybe 9 or 10 shops mostly restaurants/cafes and souvenir shops. Minstry of crab is here. If you are coming to explore the precinct you may need a maximum of 30 mins.

    Amazing Structure from Yesteryear
Amazing to think that this modern repurposing of an historic facility can bring so much pleasure to the many visitors frequenting the place. Loads of eateries bars and gift shops now abound in what was once a place where one probaly went to die before modern medicines against basic illnesses existed. Supect that there has been a considerable amount of refurbishment but the place looks unique and offers an amazing haven from the sun and the hussle of the city. Certainly worth checking out if in the neighbourhood.

I loved every visit to the Dutch hospital as it is a great place to relax, have a meal and stroll around while doing some light shopping. There is an assortment of affordable restaurants offering amazing food for couples & families alike.

A Must visit :)

The history of the place may be exciting to some but now it’s just a strip mall. There are some neat shops in there to buy some gifts but you can find the same shops in nearby shopping malls. Spa Ceylon was nice only because I could sit while my girl shopped.

Is it worth a special trip to go there ? Well, our hotel was close by so we walked there otherwise I would say not. We were going to eat at Ministry of Crab but there were so many bad reviews we opted for somewhere else.

Beware the aggressive tuk tuk drivers. Some will cheat you

Dutch hospital has a variation eateries, which range from specialized export quality crab, pizza, dessert and even gourmet food as well as a pub for those who want to just enjoy the breeze while listening to music and having a chat.

Its a great place to start your night with drinks and dinner before heading out for a party.. but If you are trying to get a table for seating try to either book a place or go a bit early.

Opposite the World Trade Centre is a fine shopping arcade with restaurants and smart shops including the Ministry of Crab restaurant and Odel’s and Barefoot shops. It is the oldest building in Colombo, built in 1669 a fine example of 17th century Dutch colonial architecture, with 4 sides around a central courtyard, open verandahs and thick walls. Floors had terracotta tiles floors, high beamed ceilings, and airy rooms with large windows, all designed to keep the wards cool. It was the first hospital to be built by the Dutch in Asia and served officers of the Dutch East India Company and Dutch sailors.
However, when the British arrived in 1796, it ceased to be a hospital and served as a military barracks. Surprisingly perhaps, the building was still in existence, due largely to its solid construction, when Sri Lanka became independent in 1948. Since then the building has been used for various purposes. Before the 1980’s is was used by the Colombo Apothecaries. It was restored in 1984 by the architect Ashley de Vos. For more than a decade, it was Fort Police station. In 1996 it suffered severe damage from then LTTE attack on the World Trade Centre and It was abandoned, fenced off and largely forgotten. It was scheduled for demolition but in 2011, it was realized that this building could be saved, if it could be put to practical use. It was converted into a smart shopping arcade in 2011 whilst retaining the Dutch Architectural style. And what a fine job they have made of it.

A lovely retreat through the day in Colombo, pretty shops and cafes to enjoy at leisure. At night it was bustling, vibrant and alive. The live band in one square was brilliant, everyone was enjoying themselves in a happy safe environment.

We spent both and afternoon and an evening there, (visited the ministry of crab, it was delicious!) and thoroughly enjoyed both times.

Well worth a visit, it was great to visit

I've already been here three times with friends and family. And we dined at the 'work in progress' restaurant run by the Colombo Hilton on all three occasions, mainly because they serve on the beautiful open air courtyard which is pretty much the heart and soul of the Dutch Hospital. Sitting out here on a clear night is an awesome experience. Their menu is a pub/cafe type but makes for a complete dinner... not to mention the legendary Hilton service standards. Toddlers have ample space to run around and the large extensive open air space takes their screams and shrieks very well!

The Dutch Hospital us a wonderful place to spend the evening for dinner and party. Lots of restaurants and bars with life entertainment. The restaurants are pricy but it was worth it. Also some nice shops around the area. Lots of local Tuk Tuk drivers offering services but better ignore them as they will run after you.

Located in the heart of the city, the Dutch Hospital is considered to be the oldest building in Colombo and its inner courtyard is nowadays a cute but quite poor shopping and dining precinct. In terms of food, you can find here the Ministry of Crab Restaurant, Heladiv Tea Club and Colombo Fort Café. For shopping you have a small Barefoot shop and a few small souvenir stores. A nice, little area, worth a quick stop..
