For some reason I felt that Arugam bay was very different from the rest of SL. The journey to get there is an adventure in it self. The first thing you notice getting in to A bay is that time just moves slowly here. The folks around are super friendly, be it the surfers on the beach, restaurant staff, the... More

If you like over crowded breaks, local surfers who have no concept of surf culture or etiquette, learners with Mini-Mals sitting at the peak bailing their boards, reef cuts that get infected from disgusting bacteria ridden water and the fattest laziest wave you'll ever surf, then Arugam Bay may just be the spot for you. On my first night arriving... More

when you work in hospitality, one of the best things you can do is to get away from it all. No service or quality expectations when my partner and i visited arugam bay, which was a good thing. we got greeted by friendly down to earth people, all looking to have a great time and ensure that the party is... In contrast to our last visit in 2012 some new hotels and restaurants built in this scenic surfing coastal belt. In contrast to shady clumsy buildings owned by local Muslim community last time, better tourist culture is developed as local and foreign investors have put down some money . Beaches are always great and excellent in moon light. beware of... More

Spent a night after my visit to Kumana National Park. At night, Arugam Bay turns in to a different world. Plenty of street restaurants are there and they are totally on party mode and full of sea food. If you are looking for a place to lodge, there are enough places you could select. My advice for anyone is that... More

If you like to try surfing this is the place. Most low costly way is bring 4 or more people same time to surfing. To go surfing you have hire a tuk tuk or a bike.

Beach is really nice and I met lot of surfers enjoying waves. But experienced a very bad situation with tourist police, who requested us to stay away from beach because they do not allow local people to stay in the beach after 8 p.m. Had to argue to make them understand that we're local travelers and we traveled 8 hours... I just say there locals ask me 250 rupies for 8 string hoppers. In all Srylanka the price is 4-6 ripies for piece. I think that this is enough. Price for eat are crazy. Crazy. Accomodation are also expensive but in the average. Not for budget traveller.

Very nice spot for surfing, relaxed atmosphere, close to two national parks (day trips possible), nice beach with a wide range of cabanas and little hotels/guest houses. Difficult to reach though, as there is no airport or railway station close by.
