This was our first visit to Mongolia. We weren’t sure about handling logistics on our own so decided to book a 3 week tour covering major highlights in the South/Gobi, Central, and Northern Region. The tour manager Doljma got back to us promptly and was very communicative about our immediate inquiries. The experiences on the trip itself were wonderful — the host families we stayed with were very hospitable and friendly, and the sights were in visually spectacular. We wouldn’t have been able to safely travel to all of the challenging and rugged off-road locations without the competency of our talented driver who knew the roads in-and-out and handled them like a pro. Our tour guide was very friendly and personable. Altogether it felt like a very authentic experience of the countryside. On our tour (“Highlights of Mongolia”), it was fascinating to see the different biospheres of the country (all 3 were very different). That said, covering so much ground meant lots of driving time (some days just that) so we would probably opt for a shorter tour or a combination of driving/flights next time. Also the initial briefing and daily briefly could be improved — especially info on how often and where showers will be available, specific guidelines to dress appropriately for weather, what to expect for meals/food. Our itinerary was reversed due to weather conditions (which was fine), but some of the descriptions were a bit unclear (e.g. “hiking to X location” was really just a short walk). It would also have been great to get a bit more in depth/detail in terms of historical info on the areas we visited. Our guide and driver will often times be fed by host families while they cooked for us using items bought from grocery store — food is cooked on a camper stove with basic cooking supplies and quality of food will likely vary depending on your guide. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience that we very much enjoyed!

I highly recommend Sunpath Mongolia if you are looking to do an adventure across Mongolia (they have several different tours). I was a solo traveler and did the Gobi group tour guided by Anarbayar and it was absolutely incredible! The prices were super reasonable compared to other tour operators and Doljmaa went out of her way to solve problems for us and make sure we had a great experience. Everyone at Sunpath is super friendly and I learned a lot about Mongolian culture and the nomadic lifestyle while staying with local families. Anarbayar also organized amazing activities - we made traditional khuurshuur fried dumplings by hand and had a traditional Mongolian BBQ! As for COVID testing, I came from Istanbul and a test was not required to enter Mongolia. I am headed to Seoul next and I had to get a rapid test within a day of my departure. This was easy as Doljmaa helped me book a test at Intermed in Ulaanbaatar and we were able to tack it onto the end of the tour. All in all, I am so happy I chose Sunpath - I’ve made memories for a lifetime and am really pleased with the experience and staff!

Mongolia after reading through a blog post and the prompt response I received from Doljmma when I enquired on tour details via FB messenger. I like her good understanding of English and clarifications on inclusion and pricing. There was also trust from her end that she suggested we pay in USD cash the full tour fee when we are in Ulaanbaatar (UB). On her recommendation, I settled on the 9 day Gobi and Orkhon Valley tour. We were personally picked up by Doljmma together with our driver, Batjaa for our airport transfer to downtown UB. Our tour was led by our English speaking tour guide, Zola and driver, Batjaa. Zola is a friendly lady in her final year Masters programme. While there is an age gap, she makes the effort to engage us in conversations. She always has our interests at heart and made sure our dietary requests, physiology concerns such as sleeping condition were at its best possible. She has the energy to explore all the attractions with us. Mind you, it is physically draining doing the climbs in Mongolia terrain and strong windy weather. I really appreciate her effort in supporting me to endure the steep climb up the Khongoryn Els sand dunes and the Khavtsgait to see the petroglyphs. Batjaa, due to language difference, was more reticent but once we ignite his interest in our conversation topic, he would participate actively with Zola as our interpreter. We really appreciate his good and patient driving etiquette and skills manouvering across dirt, water, rocky terrains while we doze off on long hours of drive, in rain and snow. We took the tourist camp option as we preferred a more comfortable tour experience. There were some mismatch in expectations as this was our first time in Mongolia. We expected attached toilets in our gers but none had that. So it was an experience weathering the cold windy, wet evenings/nights to the common bath/toilet areas. Zola was sensitive to our discomfort so she always tried her best to manage our expectations and made arrangements to make us feel better in those situations. Be prepared for very long drives and one attraction for most days. And schedules and camp locations do change due to weather or availability. We were brought to the best possible vantage points for the attractions. Some improvements could be less time spent on visiting various nomad families. I recognise it could be Mongolian culture to greet and visit each other but priorities could be better managed. There was one day where it was already a long drive, yet we made stops at a family. We took another hour or so to arrive at our camp. It then started raining and was wet and cold when we arrived. The toilet facilities were not one of the best so it was not a good experience. Another suggestion could be experience different camp styles instead of all gers. I really enjoyed Gobi Caravanserai as it is different from the typical ger. Nevertheless, it has been a different and good experience, especially the Yol Valley and horse riding, stone cooked lunch with the host family at Orkhon Valley that we enjoyed most. We also appreciate the long drive on the last tour day. We appreciate it and thank you.

Had a wonderful tour of Gobi with Sunpath. Our guide and driver Zolo and Batjaa have been very hospitable, sensitive and able guides. Our journey have been smooth and we have managed to cover most of what we expected. It was special when we woke up in the wee morning to discover our camp was covered with snow. Indeed 4 seasons in a day is possible in Mongolia.
