About
History and Architecture: The Choijin Lama Temple was built between 1904 and 1908 as the residence for Choijin Lama Luvsankhaidav, the brother of the Bogd Khan (the spiritual leader of Mongolia at the time). The temple complex consists of five temples, each dedicated to a different Buddhist deity. The architecture reflects a mix of Mongolian, Tibetan, and Chinese influences. Religious Significance: The temple complex served as an active place of worship for Buddhist monks until the communist era in the 1930s, when religious activities were suppressed. It was spared from destruction during that time, and today it stands as a testament to Mongolia's rich religious and cultural heritage.

This is a small group of temple buildings in the centre of UB which has been saved from the property developers. Several of the buildings are closed off or under renovation at present. There are some interesting exhibits but I am not sure it was worth the T20,000 entrance fee. It is maybe worth doing as a side visit to the main square if you have spare time but I wouldn't go out of your way for this.

🇲🇳 It was a pretty nice visit, but it’s a relatively small place where there’s a weird atmosphere in the city center, surrounded by buildings.
Otherwise, you are monitored in every temple you visit.
I much prefer the winter palace of Bogdo Khan which gives off something more mystical.

The complex consists in six temples originally occupied by the brother of the ruler the Eighth Bogd Jetsun Dampa Khan, Choijin Lama Luvsankhaidav, who was the state oracle.
The complex looks like an ancient temple but it was built in 1908.
Unfortunately I can’t go inside, unbelievably the ticket office don’t accepted credit cards

When in UB you should take out 10-15 mins. just to walk around this old buddhist temple complex which is only a five min. walk from the central Djengis Khan Square. It offers great views of old Mongolia on a backdrop of modern steel & glass highrisers. I hope they will keep this pocket if history, esthetics and history.

Modest lil temple in the heart of UB. Didn’t think it was open when I passed by due to the fencing and stuff.
Worth a visit. I really enjoyed this old and modest temple with skyscrapers in the background.
As usual, admission charge and another charge for photo taking.

The artwork and paper mache masks were over the top fabulous. Fascinating to take pics of the outside of the temples with the modern skyscrapers in the background. We pretty much had it to ourselves. Very mellow peaceful place to chill.

If you are looking for peace in the heart of the city centre of UB, this is the right place. The old Buddhist temple is surrounded by the burgeoning modern day concrete jungle. It's just a good relief if you are looking for serenity. Unlike many of the vast monasteries, Chojin Lama Temple is quite small but if you are interested in the mysticism of Buddhism, it's a good place for you.

Temple is located just behind the main square. There are around 5 smaler temples on the territory of the museum.
It doesn't take long to check everything there.
Also, get into gifts shop - they have some good handmade stuff.

Nice little museum with I think a $2 or $3 entry fee. Beautiful statues, a number of small buildings to explore filled with Buddhist artifacts, and one "scary" spot. The small temple at the back of the complex was the site of the Chojin Lama's secret rituals involving invocation of the Wrathful Protector Gods. The ceiling of this room is painted with decapitated heads, severed limbs, and other bloody scenes. The idea is that the Protectors would visit these horrors on the Lama's enemies. Interesting place, and if you are itching for an American-style meal you can skip across the street to Millie;'s.

Now increasingly surrounded by booming Mongolia, this is one of the few temples that were not destroyed. Well displayed exhibits including the most stunning Maidar statue by Mongolia's genius artist, Zanabazar.

When is museum open? What us admission cost? And are there photo fees?
Written October 15, 2018
A lot of the information people have a given here is wrong.
The museum most certainly is open, and I believe admission is 4000 or 8000 tugrik, and there definitely is a photo fee.
The photo fee is quite expensive: 40,000 tugrik. If you only take pictures outside, they might not complain, but there certainly is a posted photo fee, and it only is good for 30 minutes of photography.
Make sure that you visit the central building. Because so few people work there, it will not always be open, but they will certainly open it for you when you're there making a visit. The main building has the masks and hundreds images of Buddhas, and many other things.
