About
Fair & Ethical - supporting about 150 Mongolian & ethnic Kazakh artisans from all over Mongolia. From the most simple product to the most high end, QUALITY is key. Artisans and Mary & Martha make a sustainable living and customers buy quality, useful products at reasonable prices. We are the only shop that buys its products before we sell because we want to be fair to artisans and we believe in the products - all other shops pay artisans if their products sell.

There are quality, fairly-priced souvenirs both large and small, all skilfully handcrafted by local artisans, so by purchasing their goods, you are really helping to support and empower the local community. I left with a stunningly elegant bag made by a Kazakh artisan and a gorgeously colourful zip pouch upcycled from decorative wall hangings. I also had the most wonderful conversation with the founder/owner Irene and learned a lot from her, and found the rest of the staff all very beautiful and kind. My visit to Mary & Martha truly left a smile on my face, and I could not recommend them highly enough.

The shop is just 200 meters off Peace Avenue near the State department store. You can find lots of embroided items such as pouches, bags and pillow covers, as well as felt products and ankle bones. Staff is kind and speaks English.

Whether in person shopping in UB or remote shopping this is the best experience in Mongolia. A wonderful range of hand crafted Mongolian and Kazakh goods. Service is expert and always with a smile. Highly recommended.

We came here after our tour guide had dropped us off and found there was a better selection than the State Department Store for nearly the same price. Go see it!

Hi Melissa, thank you for finding us. With our shop being less than half of the SDS it is really nice to hear we have a better selection at an acceptable price. See you again in the future!

When we travel, we look for local products made by artisans who get paid fairly for their work. This shop (we visited the main branch) offers a wide range of such products and while they are not cheap, they are well made and of good quality. The saleswoman was very helpful and spoke good English so she could explain the source of materials and their care. And where else can you get a sweater made from fine yak's wool?

Hi Mangau, Thank you for a very helpful review and highlighting what we do well. Each product is designed by M&M and we use better quality materials than other suppliers in many of our products yet our price comparisons show us to be within 50 US cents to a USD Dollar of other prices in town. We place a high value on service especially on English and also a little on Korean, Japanese and Russian and a smattering of Dutch. Combined with product training and information for customers we feel the slight difference in prices allows us to give good service and a good shopping experience. Thank you and we will always try to improve - please ask to meet the owners if you are back- we'd love to talk more.

Wherever I travel I look to buy gifts that are locally made where an income is directly generated for the maker. In UB, Mary and Martha sell products and gifts that support different marginalised groups as well as communities. Prices vary from excellent value Christmas tree decorations to beautifully made scarfs, bags and recycled wool products. Lovely jewellery items. Friendly staff who are very helpful and knowledgeable, and if you meet the owners, they are charming and have great ethics in opening this shop. Please don't pass through UB without supporting!

You have clearly travelled far and wide so we appreciate you putting us on the map. Since September we have renovated and doubled the shop size and we're bringing in new product lines - all requested by customers during 2014 - children's deel jackets, yak, camel and cashmere yarns and a large range of embroidered leather products - all should be available from February 2015. Thanking you for your review which will encourage everyone involved.

Fantastic shop(s)!!! I picked up numerous gifts at Mary and Martha's.
The second trip I made there was the day I was leaving Mongolia. At that time I met Martha. She went out of her way in getting me the embroidery piece I wanted, by having her husband deliver it to my hotel.
Remember, this is a Fair Trade Store also!

I found this store because of a sign on Peace Blvd. I was curious so I took the short detour and easily found Mary & Martha. What a fantastic little shop! They had so many gorgeous items, and each one had a tag with a photo of the artisan who made the product. The prices were extremely reasonable, and I was able to get a lot of gifts for my family back at home. I also went to the State Department Store, and while I found a few things there, it was mostly junk from China. If you want authentic products from Mongolia, you must stop here - you won't be disappointed.

Better late than never in my reply I hope - always learning - our shop has doubled in size since 2013 so we now offer more products but to the same high quality standards - we now give living wage work to over 150 people all year round.

I read great reviews about this store and they are all true!
I really like that the items are all made by people, mostly women, in Mongolia. They are getting a fair wage to make things for this store. I really wanted a pair of felt slippers, but specifically turned up toe, ankle slippers, not mules (no heel). The State Department did not have them, but Mary and Martha's does! They have some great gifts, lots of hand embroidered bags, clothing, I bought some hand embroidered Christmas ornaments, they sell magnets and key chains. The ladies are friendly but do not bother you unless you ask for help. Great place to buy quality souvenirs at reasonable prices.

This shop has a tiny facade but expands to several interior rooms full of beautiful authentic woolen, cashmere and tribal hangings from Western Mongolia. This is very well priced, excellent value for the money. The buyers have very good taste. If you only have time or patience for one shop in UB this is the one to patronize.
