There are quality, fairly-priced souvenirs both large and small, all skilfully handcrafted by local artisans, so by purchasing their goods, you are really helping to support and empower the local community. I left with a stunningly elegant bag made by a Kazakh artisan and a gorgeously colourful zip pouch upcycled from decorative wall hangings. I also had the most wonderful conversation with the founder/owner Irene and learned a lot from her, and found the rest of the staff all very beautiful and kind. My visit to Mary & Martha truly left a smile on my face, and I could not recommend them highly enough.

Went for the first time today. Had beautifully crafted wall hangings, Christmas ornaments, pillow covers, wallets, all made with felt. Large inventory, English speaking clerks, and everything arranged nicely so it was easy to look at and find what you wanted. Great place to get souvenirs. It’s on a back street but they give really good directions and it’s easy to find. Also, it’s centrally located close to main square.

During my several weeks in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, I had the opportunity to visit numerous souvenir shops. Some had a small array of item while others had thousands of items to choice from. I was directed to Mary & Martha Fair & Ethical Gift & Souvenirs Shop just east of the State Department Store. The shop is small, but as soon as you enter, you are made to feel welcome by the outstanding members of the staff. The shop sells accessories, clothing (made from camel, cashmere silk and yak). Other items on display and for sale include felt slippers, leather products, handmade jewelry. Two rooms have a large range of hand embroidered wall hanging; wallets and purses on display. The items are outstanding and are well crafted and each item is handmade by a Mongolian or Kazakh. The young lady who showed me around the shop, took the initiative to explain to me how these items were made and also answered my questions about the products. Each staff member went out of her way to make me feel that I was a welcome client. As a result of the staff dedication to customer service I purchased several of the hand embroidered purses for gifts. Each item was very reasonably priced and I found that Mary & Martha prices were significantly lower that the Galleria or the State Department Souvenir Stores. It should be noted that at several of the other shops that I visited prior to Mary & Martha, I had the feeling that the staff could have care less if I purchase anything or not. Not a friendly feeling and very cold atmosphere. To the staff of Mary & Martha, please accept my sincere appreciation for your outstanding service you provided to a partially blind client. I strongly recommend a visit to Mary & Martha Shop. It should be noted that as I was departing this shop I noted a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellency handing on the wall. I Strongly concur and Mary & Martha certainly deserves the Excellency award. I very strongly recommend a visit to this establishment and I definitely will be returning on my next visit to Mongolia in early 2020.

Hi from Mary and Martha, As owners we are truly humbled by your review. You have indicated that we are doing well in all the areas we hope to excel in for our customers. We have our Christmas / New Year party in a few days - and I am going armed with this review to encourage all our shop staff for doing such a good job. AND I will be thanking our back shop staff; the ones meeting and working with artisans, contracting, taking deliveries, QC'ing products and then delivering to our shops on time so our products don't run out. There are over 20 staff and 200 artisans working to make Mary & Martha what it is today. I hope we just improve products and services in 2020. Thank you.

Was in Mongolia for a week hanging in Ulan Bator and camping out in a ger on the steppe. On my last day back in UB I realized I needed to get a few trinkets to bring home. Hit a few stores and was disappointed with all the crap I found until I wandered into M&M. They are a fair trade store and work with local crafts-people for all their goods and have a great shop. Talked to Irene there for about 20 minutes after I made my purchase and could not recommend this store any higher. Check it out if you’re in town!!!

The story and ethos behind this shop is great, they also have a great selection and cross section of quality Mongolian produce. It is a nice space to browse and anyone is sure to find some lovely keepsakes. The staff are also very friendly and helpful without being intrusive. We also found the various souvenirs that we took away to be very reasonably priced!
