For anyone who loves horse riding and camping in the natural environment, this is a must do ride. You are accommodated on a reliable, sturdy Mongolian horse with a handmade, very comfortable leather saddle. Comes with sheepskin cover should you need it. Lunches are enjoyed each day in shady spots and time to relax or stretch your legs. Camp is set up by your Mongolian crew in the afternoon, always by a running water source, while you sit at the table and chairs, snacks and hot water for beverages on the ready. Dinner is served freshly prepared and cooked, wholesome, nourishing, varied and delicious. You can spend time in the “common room” teepee tent when the weather is inclement or you prefer to be inside. Your tent is easy to set up, comfortable and waterproof. You are provided with very warm bedding and a light, concertina folding mat. If you want more, take your own hiker’s mat. Cold? A hot water bottle will be at the ready! Your ExhiaraMongolian team are exceptional. Always ready to assist, fulfil your request with warm, friendly smile and ensure you are comfortable, happy and safe. All the time, riding through some of the most beautiful scenery on earth and seeing how the Mongolian people live their lives. The best experience of my life.

It was a pleasure meeting you and having you join the Wilderness Conservation Adventure trip into the Khan Khentii Special Protected Area. It is one of our premier trips into the Khentii Mountains doing a little conservation work along the way while enjoying a great ride. Thanks so much for your comments about our team and efforts to make it a great trip. Join us again sometime.

Stone Horse is TOP NOTCH! The Gorkhi Terelj National Park riding expedition with Stone Horse is an epic wilderness adventure on the Mongolian Steppe with incredible horses, knowledgeable horsemen, and spectacular scenery. I participated in this ride in July of 2023 along with Nadaam festivities and a visit to the Gobi all organized by Stone Horse.
There is nothing I can say that will do this expedition justice. I write this months later still reeling from the experience and eager to return for more!

The horses were responsive, well trained, and well matched to the rider’s abilities. All were fit and healthy and living their best lives. Riding through the vast, rich countryside on strong, sturdy Mongolian Horses alongside a herd of loose pack horses and extra mounts, is the experience of a lifetime.

Sabina and Keith provided all the camp gear which included a high-end down sleeping bag, quality tents, storage bags, etc. The camp was equipped beyond my wildest dreams with a stove (when needed), full cooking equipment, a camp shower, and other luxuries I did not expect on this adventure. Sabina and our camp cook provided a variety of fantastic hot meals daily. The food was incredible on the trek and I am still a bit flabbergasted at how they managed to accomplish such delicious meals while out in the wilderness.

Keith and Sabina (owners) are incredible individuals, environmentalists, outdoorsmen, and horse people. Their team of horsemen, guides, and cooks are phenomenal! From booking through execution, Stone Horse provided clear communication and all necessary information and details. Keith and Sabina run a high caliber, well organized tour. I HIGHLY recommend Stone Horse expeditions for your Mongolian adventure!

I had a few days available following 5 weeks in Covid isolation. A web search got me to Stone Horse Tours (i.e. no special connection or mates rates). Keith and the team bent over backwards to accommodate me and fit in an overnight horseback trip - even provided me with much needed wet weather gear. Sabine and Byambaa were great hosts and guides during the trip - even had a glass of red wine to sooth the sore muscles at the end of day one.

I would recommend Stone Horse without thinking twice about it.

There aren't enough adjectives to explain what an amazing job the Stone Horse Team did to take care of our group. It truly was an expedition that tested all of us, but Keith and Sabina truly made the experience so special with their amazing team of horsemen and chef. There is no better way to experience the Mongolian wilderness than by the back of the docile Mongolian horse. Our chef on site at camp cooked us delicious meals to sustain our very active days. I also did side trips to Naadam and the middle Gobi, which were incredible experiences as well. I feel I only touched the surface of what Mongilia has to offer. I cannot recommend them enough to host your stay in Mongolia!!

Excellent execution, from initial communication throughout the entire trip, up until the day we left after a few additional days in UB. Keith and Sabine (owners) are extremely professional, knowledgeable and deeply embedded in the local community. This is a small family run business with a big heart and it shows. Highly recommended.

Very well organized trip with unbelievably interesting people who are Sabine and Keith. They truly care about the nature and have many fantastic stories to tell.
Views were astonishing and you can truly connect with nature by meeting various animals as well as riding so well trained and brave horses. An authentic detox from city life. I can honestly recommend this experience.

We had the pleasure of staying with Yadmaa and Davasuren for a couple of days, and we had a very nice time. Both of them are very hospitable, though language is an issue, making you feel very comfortable and safe. Davasuren is an excellent cook, and took very good care of us.
The spot is awesome and the autumn colors made it like a dream. The horse riding was also excellent, the scenery in the forest was magical. We had a lot of fun milking the cows, and taking walks around the place. The whole experience was very memorable.

The organization of the trip was however a disaster. We had to write 4-5 emails to get an answer, and even though we contacted them one month in advance, when we arrived in Mongolia we still didn't know how much money we would pay or if someone would pick us up from the bus station. We had to move around with our luggage to find a place to stay, because the Chenggis house was full, and when we finally arrived to a vacant place, the wifi was not working. The day we were supposed to visit the museum, monastery, etc we got a "guide" who was not a guide, and though he was very kind and spoke good english, he did very poor time management and in the end we didn't have time to do even half the things we were supposed to. Finally the absolute worst part was when our "guide" didn't know if someone would take us to the train station the next morning and Oggie would not answer the phone. She finally sent us an email at 22.35 (not very smart when you have to wake up at 5 o' clock in the morning and NOT have internet at home!!) to which we answered immediately we needed to get the train station earlier and of course she still has not replied. The house lady where we stayed also left us a note of the pick up time at 1.30 in the morning, while we were sleeping.
The whole experience was very disappointing and stressful, especially after all the excellent reviews we had read. What a shame...

Thanks for alerting us to this experience. We take all comments about our business seriously and will look into what happened to ensure there is no repeat of this type of service. As the owner/operator, I am out with every long horse ride in the back country. We try very hard to offer the highest standard of service possible under the conditions we travel in. We will strive to ensure any below par service is improved. Thanks again for your comments.

What was intended to only be a brief stop over ended up being one of the highlights of our China - Russia trip. A truly once in a lifetime, unforgettable experience.

After months of extensive research into the best places to stay and things to do in Mongolia, we struggled to find something that would cater to what we were looking for - a genuine Mongolian experience. We're seasoned travellers so the stock standard 'tourist tours' isn't really our cup of tea.

Organising trips around Mongolia can be a logistical nightmare, especially if it's apart of a bigger travel itinerary which it was for us. Just as we were about to give up… we stumbled across Stone Horse Expeditions. They took a lot of the stress away by organising everything for us - from pick-ups, to drop offs, accommodation and food. Keith was really accommodating to our all our needs (especially at such short notice) and made the process super smooth and easy.

Being Kiwi's, it was a huge bonus to us knowing that Keith had extensive conservation experience here in NZ. With that in mind, we knew that the adventure would be one built around respect for the locals and their environment.

We were looked after with incredible hospitality as soon as we set foot off the train right through to our sad departure. Big thanks to Keith and Oggie who took care of us during our whole stay and to Yadmaa and Davasuren (the herder family who we stayed with) for inviting us so openly into their home.

The only downside is that we didn't get to stay long enough. Which is why we’re already making plans to return for a Gobi horse trek!

There's not enough space here to rave on about our amazing experience, so if you're keen to learn more about Soviet mini-vans, trekking around Genghi's boyhood stomping ground and close encounters with wolves then you can read all about it on our blog: http://thewayfindings.com/2013/05/12/darkhid-valley-mongolia/

Thanks for the review and pointing out your more detailed writing on your travel posts. That, along with your great photo's was really interesting. We look forward to having you back to do a Gobi Crossing with us.

My girlfriend and I took the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Beijing in May 2014, and spent 4 days in Mongolia along the way. We were looking for an authentic experience and staying in a ger seemed like the best way to do it. Research led us to Stone Horse Tours, and they offered exactly what we were looking for. We did the 4-day “Train to Ger” package.

We were picked up at the train station and traveled by car, along with another couple, about an hour and a half out of Ulaanbaatar into the countryside. Before we arrived, we didn’t know if we would be going to the city guesthouse first or straight into the countryside, but it didn’t matter as most everything was taken care of for us. Since we were in the car for a while after being on the train for 28 hours, it might have been nice to grab some water, snacks, or local currency, or use the restroom before heading out of town. The driver spoke good English and I’m sure he would have happily accommodated that had we asked; just some advice for future travelers.

Our morning arrival meant we had 3 full days and 3 nights to spend out in the countryside. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a warm welcome and a big breakfast. The host family, Yadmaa and Davaasuren, could not have been kinder or more welcoming. Although they did not speak any English, we got by fine with sign language and hand gestures, and they were happy to help with anything we needed, from starting the fire, to providing more boiled drinking water. They were patient with us when we couldn’t understand things, and seemed genuinely happy to have us around.

The gers are in different locations depending on the time of year, and our mid-May visit had us at the tail end of the winter location, where sunshine is maximized. It got cold at night and we even saw a few snow flurries, but we were prepared with plenty of warm clothes and Yadmaa ensured that the wood stove in our ger kept us toasty. The setting was beautiful, surrounded by endless rolling hills. Our neighbors included a few relatives in other gers, and lots of horses, cows, sheep, a couple Kashmir goats, and a few friendly dogs. We filled our days hiking around the hills and enjoying the views, drinking tea with our fellow travelers who were staying in the neighboring ger, learning to shoot a bow and arrow, helping Davaasuren milk the cows, and going for a horseback ride with Yadmaa. When we first arrived, we didn’t know exactly what options we had to keep us busy, but fortunately Keith stopped by a few times – and invited us to join him for tea in his nearby cabin – and he helped us arrange the horseback ride and told us when or how to do some of the other things. Without Keith’s help, it would have been more difficult to figure these things out.

My girlfriend is a vegetarian, and with advance notice, they were able to accommodate that better than anywhere else on our trip. We often ate the same meals, mine with meat and hers with a vegetarian substitute, so she was still able to experience typical Mongolian cuisine. The food was all very tasty and most meals were filling. We especially liked the salty milk tea we had the first morning and stir-fried, homemade noodles.

On our last day in Mongolia, we enjoyed a final breakfast and said goodbye before heading into Ulaanbaatar. A couple hours at the city guesthouse (basically a hostel where we had private rooms) gave us a chance to take a much-welcomed shower and connect to the outside world via wi-fi. We were then taken out into the city for lunch, a walk around the center, an afternoon tour of some of the sites, gift & souvenir shopping, a folk music show complete with throat singing and a contortionist, and a big dinner to finish up. Everything was included in the package price we paid for the Train to Ger package, with the exception of the restaurant meals in Ulaanbaatar. Since the group was just us and another couple with our guide, we were able to decide what we wanted to see and do. Ulaanbaatar was a busy, noisy, dirty city; half a day there was enough for us, and we were grateful to have a friendly and knowledgeable guide with us.

We feel that this was just about as authentic an experience as you can get, and we left Mongolia with some fantastic memories. The accommodations and setting in the countryside are rustic – think more like tent camping than a B&B: no running water, no electricity (aside from a single battery-powered light in the ger), open-air outhouse, etc. – but is perfect for anyone up for a little adventure. There’s no schedule and no planned activities, so the time there is what you make of it, and it can provide the ultimate chance to unplug and relax. Our time in the countryside was truly memorable and we would recommend Stone Horse Tours to anyone with a sense of adventure looking to experience a piece of true Mongolian life.

It was nice to hear from you and have you at the cabin. The ger stay really is an authentic experience and Yadmaa and Davasuren enjoy having guests from around the world visit them. Hope the rest of your journey went well and perhaps we see you back here again some day.

I have just completed the 8 day Gorkhi Terelj National Park horse riding expedition followed by the 6 day Gobi Desert Tour with a few days in Ulan Bator.

What can I say, for me it was a trip I've been wanting to do for so long, horse riding in Mongolia on true Mongolian horses. No words can truly express how amazing this experience was for me. Brownie, my trusty steed is a handsome and perfect horse that I loved spending time with. He was the perfect gentleman. As was Stinky a beautiful, cuddly dog. The team were also excellent, endless energy, thoughtfulness, stories and general love for what they do, this really came across throughout the trip. The food was great, plentiful and tasty, the equipment of outstanding quality and the hot water bottles in good supply, (it was a bit chilly), though for me, this added to the experience.

There are not enough adjectives to describe the positives of this trip or the team, owners/company. Suffice to say, that I would totally recommend it to anyone.

In terms of the Gobi section on the trip, the positives just keep on going. I was the only one on the trip, yet they still ran it. The Gobi team were fab, great knowledge and again couldn't do enough for you. I stayed in some great local gers, rode a camel, climbed sand dunes (more difficult than I appreciated), searched for dinosaur bones, saw gazelles, foxes, vultures and lots of amazing natural features. We even made felt carvings my torch light.

Davaa and Ganchimeg are also so integral to what was an overall great experience.

For me it's the personal touches and the love of their animals and what they do.

Thank you all so much x

Marie, it was a pleasure having you with us for the October Gorkhi-Terelj NP Expedition horse ride. You did well and could easily do our more demanding rides. Contact me when you want to return for a longer trip, perhaps the Khentii Mountains 14 day Expedition.
