Most travel books say that there are over 10 different animal species here but we only saw squirrels, marmots and the Takhi horse. However, the Takhi horse is a highlight of this place and it was a pleasure to be able to watch this untamed horse brought back from near extinction.
We didn't see any horses until 1830 in the evening and people had given up after the assumption that the horses will not come down to drink water after heavy rains of previous night. But around 1845 we saw over 30 Takhi horses at a location near the only Ger lodging in the park.
Like a safari, you need to be patient. As per the rules, you are not supposed to go within 300 meters of all wildlife in the park but I saw many visitors getting really close to the horses.
We enjoyed the off-road driving but it is not for everyone. The food at the only lodge in the park was pretty good and the view at night is unforgettable.

For people who like nature and wanting a nice day out of traffic choked Ulaan Bataar, opt for Khustai National Park. About an hour out of the city, it takes you through the outskirts of the city, an industrial wasteland into gorgeous steppes. In October, the grassland is stark but beautiful and the park provides a taste of the outdoors that is within easy reach of the city.
We saw wild horses and deers but it is the sheer vastness of the land and the great outdoors that captivated us. Isolated gers and farmland with flocks of goats and sheep add to the charm of this trip. We even saw a flock of vultures feeding on a dead horse at a nearby farm which was treat Signing up with the tour was easy with the travel agent on the second floor of the State Department Store. They speak good English and so did the guide who took us.
