This is free and a really interesting mix of historical information and artifacts. Some of the things in the museum seem random (like some government person's old cell phone), but some are really interesting, and the random ones add a unique feel to the displays. I'm not sure when the museum is open, though. It's not open everyday; there must be a schedule for it, but we haven't figured that out yet.

The National Museum of Mongolia is well worth a visit. The deer stelae in front of the building entice the visitor to explore the exhibits that start from burial mound finds from the Stone Age through the periods of various tribes that settled in this area to Chinese and Russian domination and finally to independence. In particular, the description of the influences of the Turkic people was very good. The jewelry, costumes and musical instruments are beautifully exhibited, the lighting is good and the descriptions are in Mongolian and English. Private guides are available for hire. The museum occupies only three floors and each floor is thoughtfully curated. There is sufficient material in this museum to inspire children and adults to reflect upon the past, to consider effects on the present and to anticipate the future. A very pleasant afternoon that left me thinking about human struggle for survival resilience, and thriving. Well done!

It takes you through the history of the place from Ghengis Khan to the present with exhibits on the costumes, weaponary, various artefacts that went with each age. You can ask for a guide. Has a small souvenir store

I was lucky enough to see this place open. I really enjoy my visit, the guide (provided free) was wonderful.
