Post Office: Stamps and mail

Just to the west of Sukhbaatar Square one find this large Russian built building that dominates most of the block. It the Central Post Office for Ulaanbaatar. As one enters the building it is transformed from a dull exterior to a well light and organized facility. The interior lobby is a bit crowded with small shops (bank, Tourist Information Center, Mongolian Mobil Phone Company, A Tourist Office, Souvenir shop and several other businesses). Also there are a plethora of individuals who want to sell you a verity of things ranging from leather paintings to tours of the city and country. All at outrages prices. Be sure to keep an eye on your personal property. In the hassle things have a habit of disappearing. Once you get through the lobby one enters the Post Office and it is very organized and modern. In the center of the room, there is a circular booth with a young lady who is selling stamps, post cards and providing information as needed in English. Her array of post cards and stamps is impressive. Purchased several post cards and stamps from her and the transaction was completed in a matter of a few minutes. Excellent customer service. Just wish the American Postal Service was as effective. Behind the circle is several postal windows that handle Express, Registered and Special Handling Mail. There are also two small office that sell Mongolian Postal items. To the right of the center counter, one finds a stairway leading up to the second floor and the Postal Museum. The Museum has on display examples of Mongolian stamps going back to earliest days. If you are interested in philately this is a great place to spend several hours looking at the history of Mongolia in stamps, as well as learning about the early days of the Mongolian Postal Service. Outstanding museum and well worth the time. I spent 2 1/2 hours at the Post Office and feel that it was time well spent.

Everyone in UB knows the location of the Post Office, so this is a great reference point if you are calling a taxi or meeting friends. It is true that there are interesting articles such as books and stationary to be bought inside, and some staff speak English.

As a functioning entity the Post Office fails, however. Letters or packages from outside the country can easily spend up to four months in this bureaucratic purgatory before being released.

The crosswalk over Peace Avenue outside the main door is also one of the safer spots to cross the thoroughfare, as there a small but significant delay in lights changing, giving pedestrians reasonable odds of reaching the other sidewalk uninjured.

This is the place you could buy Post cards and Stamps.
Of course you could send Post cards from there.
I don't know to sending parcel might be expensive to some people.
In there some ATMs and Cellular phone service there. Also Tour Agent is there recently.
Plus Souvenir Shop is there with good value.

This used to be vital for picking up your foreign parcels and making phone calls abroad. Now DHL and FedEx are in Ub and everyone has a mobile phone i guess it is mostly used by the locals. There are gift shops, beware the price for locals and the price for foreigners. The same can be said of the several artists who are desperate to cell their art to any tourist.

The Ulaanbaatar Central Post Office, located on the North Side of Peace Avenue at Chinggis Khaan Square, kitty-corner from The Blue Sky Hotel and Tower, IS ONE OF MY MOST SPECIAL PLACES here in Ulaanbaatar. I purchase and I mail Post Cards by the hundreds (100's).

This Post Office has literally three boxes of Post Cards available for one to sort through and examine. There is also a wide variety of special stamps available for purchase. There are also post cards on display in a glass enclosed viewing case.

The staff are very polite and friendly and speak excellent English. Mail can be placed in a special blue International Mail drop box that is picked up three times daily. This gives me great comfort because I feel my postal cards will be handled promptly. So far, knock on wood, my post cards have a perfect record of being delivered to my addressees. They accept VISA credit cards and this is very helpful to me since I make purchases in the range of 50,000 to 80,000 Mongolian Tug at a time.

The post may take time if you do not use Fed Ex or DHL. I am told it normally gets there in the end, which is true but post does go missing still. Plenty of stamps to buy and of course souvenirs. Be wary of the many Mongolian artists who will want to deprive you of your mnt! I did buy some in 2012, always haggle if you do buy Chinngis Khan or the Mongolian warrior on horseback.
