A great place for photos and just enjoying the local art and culture. No one bothered us, but there are a lot of animals (cats, chickens), as well as quite a few dogs, all friendly.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 17, 2023
- tenthlistenSan Francisco, California313 contributionsPeaceful (and free!) ExperienceI really enjoyed our visit of Vat that Khao. The reclining buddha was beautiful. Entry was free and facilities, like bathrooms and an occasional food stall, are available. It was very peaceful to walk around and is located next to Pha That Luang (which does require a fee to enter). I definitely recommend a visit when visiting Vientiane.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 1, 2024
- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand4,282 contributionsPeaceful temple adjacent to That Luang!Vat that Khao is situated adjacent to Pha That Luang, so the two can easily be combined in one visit. Inside the temple grounds is a large reclining Buddha. Also, don't see the impressive mural paintings depicting the life of Buddha inside one of the nearby buildings. Reportedly, the paintings are relatively new and were painted by monks (impressive talent).Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 5, 2024

- LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,632 contributionsHuge Statue of Lying Down BuddhaOne of the things that I clearly remember during my visit here is the huge Buddha Statue lying down. Most statues are either standing or seating down. I took pictures of this Buddha and those of the other statutes near it. Had a difficult time taking a photo of the entire body of this buddha, need a better camera!Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 21, 2024

I was amazed when I bumped into the giant reclining Buddha as I had not heard about the place prior to my visit to Laos. Just by looking at the Buddha's resting posture is sufficient to bring peace to your mind.

This is a very large, very impressive temple complex that is the 'must see' stop in Vientiane. It's (virtually) free to visit and there's a lot to see in the various buildings. The only fee is Kip10,000 to visit the central stupa. There's absolutely no reason to pay to see this at all. You can see all there is to see by walking the perimeter wall. Inside, all you can is walk the interior wall! You can't go into the stupa itself. It's a 'solid' building. The other buildings are accessible and although you'll have to remove your shoes, that's the only 'negative' if it's even that. The monks are also very helpful and will not only freely pose for photos, but they also will give impromptu guides. Consider the Kip10,000 as a fee for the whole complex and it's a great deal, but if you are too mean to pay, just visit the main stupa exterior. It's the same thing.

Tucked away behind some temples, in a lovely garden, lies the golden resting Buddha. looks so serene. Also you do not have to pay to see her. The highlight of the Temple complex, but just a small part

This is a great place. You can see many things in there, free of charge. Admission fees are required for only some of the activities in there.

An hour probably is enough if just seeing the temple
