- Reslysten54Vienna, Virginia2,728 contributionsUnfortunately, the museum was closing early for the May 1 holiday, so our visit became very rushed. My impression is that the historical collection is quite rich, and signage in English is extensive. I noted that comrade Lenin is still around, but he has been moved to the back of the museum.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 22, 2024
- Kirill L1 contributionIt would be fine. Came to see the city, never been before. Entering the wardrobe immediately ruined the mood and the whole impression. The wardrobe officer, who is taking on the ham-fisted outerwear, takes off her jacket, snorts and shouts “QUICKLY UNDRESS”. To a grown man on YOU, that tone. And this lady works in such a cultural institution, mind-numbing.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 23, 2024
- Leslie J793 contributionsGreat museum - highly recommend. Includes ancient artifacts, a ger, cases full of textiles - clothes, carpets, bags, etc., one floor devoted to Soviet-era history. Lots to check out! Also some nice things in the gift shop.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 22, 2024

Very easy to find, right at the heart of the city. Affordable entrance fees, was allowed to take photos with my camera.
There are several floors to explore - the museum itself looks pretty modern. There are descriptions in English and there is a coherent narrative being delivered. Some of the exhibits are quite interesting.
Of what I heard, some locals are not very happy with the story being told, so I grabbed myself a giant history book later and hope that clarifies some issues. Still worth checking out, it's among the better of its kind in the region. We liked the interactive elements, such as a game where you need to put things in a yurt in the right place.

I visited this museum today on vacation.
A large four-story building.
The museum represents the entire culture, from primitive times to the present.
Entrance to the museum is inexpensive, only 150 soms.
This is approximately 150 rubles if converted to our money.

For most visitors, Bishkek will be their entry point into Kyrgyzstan ; so a visit to the State History Museum would be essential to understand the country. It is a modern museum with large rooms, very sharp displays, good light and clear explanations. Easy to spend 2 hours at least.

Most important and impressive Museum in Central Asia that offers a unique experience to understand the history, culture, civilization and heritage of Kyrgyzstan,a beautiful country. The exhibits expose the visitors to archeological finds, models of caves and excavations from the past. The yurts, the traditional dwelling house of nomads, beautiful embroidery, vibrant carpets and a variety of exhibits are educative as well as informative. A must visit. There is an admission ticket to enter the place.

Interesting journey through the history of Kyrgyzstan, with lots of artefacts on display. Most signboards (all the of the main ones detailing the time periods) are in Kyrgyz, Russian and English.
Some problems with the English translations on the newer interactive displays (though the do say they are still testing these)
Looks to be more coming as there were some empty display cases.

This is the 3rd year in a row I have been to Bishkek, the first two years the museum was closed. This year it was finally restored and reopened. The end result is first class. They did a tremendous job with the renovations. If I had one gripe, it would be that there wasn't enough dedicated to the silk road history of the region, nothing about those times. However, it was a state history and not just a history of the region, so my expectations may have been a little too high. I was hoping to see more on Kahn and Atilla and the silk road. But it was very well done and 3 hours there went fast.

Its shut, most annoying, The building architecture is very impressive, but it has been shut for years, Why? apparently funding. hmmm. Watching the changing of the goose-marching guards outside is interesting and worthy of a photograph, but it seems to me, tourism is not a priority, or showcasing the fascinating history of Bishkek and its surrounding lands, Hardly any signage in English, or directional maps to other areas of interest.

.The State Historical Museum of the Kyrgyz Republic situated obn Ala-Too Square behind "Monument to Mans" is one of the largest museums in Central Asia. The first exhibition was presented on March 5, 1927. Originally it was called as the Central Historical Museum of Kyrgyzstan. In 1933 it was renamed the museum of local history. In 1954 it was awarded the name of the State Historical Museum. The museum contains exhibits that tell about the history of nomadic peoples from the Stone Age to the present day.The museum’s extensive collection of more than 90,000 exhibits includes artifacts from Kyrgyzstan’s prehistory, from its ancient Silk Road era, Soviet-era history, and modern state. Culture exhibits focus on Kyrgyz nomadic culture, traditional handicrafts, and the musical instruments used to make Kyrgyz folk music. The museum contains various photographs and documents about the formation and development of the Kyrgyz Soviet Socialist Republic. There is also a section having ancient manuscripts of the Quran. The current building where the museum is located was built in 1984.In 2021,after a 5 year reconstruction the Historical Museum was opened with more than $30 million spent on it. There are many amazing things in the Historical Museum, like the wooden statues of horses worth €17,000.

The museum shows the history of Kyrgyzstan and takes you through the to the breaking up of the Soviet Union. Very interesting. Many ancient tools and weapons used through the years to see. Fascinating.
Our favorite souvenier shop in Bishkek is located just inside the front doors of the museum. It is a family run shop with a plethora of pieces to take home from homemade window treatments and pillows, made from authentic antique Kyrgyz fabrics, to hand painted stationary. Beautiful pieces and very authentic.
