I loved this statue of Kyrgyz hero Manas on a plinth high above a small plaza in front of Bishkek Philarmonic. Most pictures show the Manas Statue in Ala-Too Square, but I preferred this one which is about a ten minute walk from Ala-Too in the University quarter.

You will find Manas Statue along the main drag of Bishkek. There is a lot of foot traffic here. And other than the statue and a large square, there isn't much else.

We came on October 23 and there were lots of pretty flowers. We took a Yandex and were dropped off at Osh Bazaar which is on one end and walked along the main street passing Manas Statue and Ala Too Square and Victory Square to the other end. It will take you about an hour to do this walk.

This Manas statue is situated away from the city centre but arguably looks more impressive, as he appears to galloping away from a dragon. A younger looking version of him, the statue is full of pigeons, which can ruin a good picture. The surrounding area is also quote pleasant with colourful flowers planted and situated in a quiet area. I did some people sleeping on the benches so not sure how safe this area is once dark.

We preferred this Manas statue to the more popular one at Ala Too Square. In this sculpture he has a sword in his right hand and shield in his left, seemingly warding off an attack from a giant snake monster that is curled around the sculpture. On his right, there is a sculpture of a lady in traditional Kyrygz dress holding a bowl of milk in two hands, with a cloth also in her hands. On the left of Manas, is another sculpture of an elderly man in Kyrygz clothes, wearing a Kalpak (national hat) on his head. The column on which the Manas statue sits had many lights, and a fountain was also in front of it. Unfortunately the fountain was not working when we visited.

The statues are in a small park in front of the Philharmonic Hall. There are flower beds and four other busts of famous Kyrygz poets, actors and musicians.Immeadiately opposite this complex is the City Hall building, which is itself an attraction. It is an old Russian building with circular white columns and a spire at the top of the structure.

The Manas statue does not seem to be in a regularly visited area, but it is a short 15 minute walk west on Chuy Avenue from Ala Too Square. A bus could be taken for two stops from Ala Too Square to reach here. The nearest attraction is a short walk further west on Chuy Avenue, to see the statue of Kalyk Akiyevdin Esteligi.

He was in Bishkek in 80 and was direct with two of his comrades, the performer of the remarkable creation of the sculptor TurgubaySadykov monument to Manas, two figures Kanikei and Bokay, the storytellers of the national epic, and finally came specially from Moscow to admire this sculptural composition once again.
