One of the best winter trips I have ever taken. As a single female traveler always traveling solo, I was apprehensive about a snowy winter hike up a canyon. My tour guide was simply amazing. Mars was everything I could have asked for to feel secure & adventurous. First though, I have to say, my flight to Bishkek was diverted to Almaty due to snow & ice weather so I thought I would forfeit my tour. After speaking with Mars, he assured me that as I was the only participant for the day, he would await my flight. I arrived in Bishkek, 3 hours later and he was waiting.
It was an exciting drive in the snow to the Canyon and a great hike up & back. He had a surprise tea on the peak overlooking the canyon, as well as brief stops at an excellent local eatery where I sampled delicious local meal & tea.
I would highly recommend this tour with him.

We went on a long trail, to the very end of the canyon, about 6 km from the parking lot. We enjoyed it, but in comparison with other canyons and gorges in Kyrgyzstan (the “fairy tale” canyon, the Grigorievskoye and Barskoonskoye gorges) it’s not amazing. The most interesting thing about the canyon is the rock formations in the middle of the path. By and large, you don’t have to walk until the very end, the views there are much simpler...

Loved this place a lot. It's about 12 km back and forth. Walking is easy, as there are no special climbs to horseback, except when climbing mountains on purpose. The views themselves were beautiful, of course there are many similar places in other countries, but we loved it. Along the way, there are three places that have to be carefully traversed - you can specifically swerve and hurt your knees or elbows. Those who were in the groups were helped by guides, but we were on our own and in normal shoes, so we could easily have hurt ourselves. Be careful in general).

If you like to visit an unusual place, off the beaten track and tourists free, this is the right place. For some reason, although this place is easily accessible, very few people go there and even most of the locals don't know about the canyon.
You have to get down at the Krasnyy most (A365) and there is a sign post for Konorchek canyon. Before you go contact the local CBT or Tourist info office to get the details about getting there and a map (CBT guy from Kochkor was very helpful as well as the Peace Corps volunteer based in Kyrgyzstan who gave me the information).
Depending from where you are coming (we were in Kochkor), you can rent a taxi that will wait for you or you can easily come with marshutka and on the way back flag down marshutka or a private car (we waited few minutes and the car stopped).
Walk through the canyon is easy since it is flat with very slight descending when walking towards, but in few places (5 or 6), it might be a bit difficult to climb up over rocks.
When we were there (early September), through the canyon that leads to the Konorchek canyons there was a tiny stream, in spring the stream might be stronger.
When you reach the Konorchek, there will be several branches that you can explore. Canyon can be visited in 4-5 hours, but if you have time, enjoy a full day wondering around and enjoying the fantastic scenery and silence.
Absolutely worth a trip.

Konorchek is 125 km from Bishkek. We hirted transport and guide with Pegas Adventure. Started in the morning from our hotel from Bishkek. On the we have seen in tersting thing Burana minaret. Its build 11 th centery. After arriving to Boom gorge we had lunch in a cafe. After we started trekking to Konorchek canyon, on the way trail is. not difficult, but view is really big grand canyons. Konorchek canyons is nice place to have short trekking on the way to Issyk Kul lake or on the back way to Bishkek. Also good as short trek before trekking on more difficult routes in Terskey Ala-Too range.
Most important things is do not go when its rainy or possibility for rain due to it could be huge volume of water in narrow part of gorge which is collected from all Canyon.

If you drive to Issyk Kul you will not miss the big sign showing the direction to Konorchek Canyons. The way goes up through narrow dry gorge until you reach after around one and a half hours open area surrounded by red rocks of different sizes and shapes. If the weather is nice it is definitely worth a stop on the way.

I went to the Konorchek Canyons for a one day trek with the Trekking Union of Kyrgyzstan I paid 460 SOM for the guide and transpiration!
I felt like I was back in the states! I felt like I was in Utah and I found a small part of the Grand Canyon in Kyrgyzstan. It was great! I would like to go there on bike in the summer. Its a dry canyon so make sure to bring lots of water with you. It's easy to find and it's in the Boom Gorge.
My guide told me that there once was a volcano in this canyon 2-3 million years ago and thats why it looks the way it does. I was not sure.

It seems to me that no country can boast of such a variety of beauty as Kyrgyzstan.

Possibly one of the most photogenic places in Kyrgystan is the Konorchek Canyons a short drive away from Bishkek. We headed there with our fixer leading the way and were astounded by the natural beauty of the place with the red sandstone canyon. Fairly easy hike through the canyon floor on the dry river bed, make sure you bring water rations and a huge memory card for your camera as you will not believe the colors and amazing beauty found here.
