Evening Urban Food Tour Including all Drinks and Transport

[For the adventurous foodie] Kicking off with a hotel pick up before enjoying an afternoon cocktail or beer with Phnom Penh's best vista. We then step out to a local market, try some tropical fruits, interesting desserts, the best ribs in the Kingdom (trust us!) and maybe even some creepy crawlies. The tour includes about 6 stops around the local market where you will get an insight into Cambodia's often under-represented food scene, rich history and culture. We then head for our main fare (yep - there's more) to a delicious, traditional Khmer BBQ where we will enjoy live local music, eat dinner as the locals eat, washed down with the national beverage - beer!

Sovannah Phum's performances are on Friday and Saturday nights, but if like us you aren't in town to make the show, their studio is open through the week and they teach you how to make your own shadow puppet. It was a great experience for my six year old son - they warned us it could take 2-3 hours and I expected him to get bored half way and I'd take over but he was fully committed and very proud that he turned a single piece of leather into a fully formed shadow puppet in around 2 hours. Strong recommended for families with young children or anyone on a rainy day (I'd say a child from 5 could do this as it's simply following a stencil, though it is essentially a hammer and nail action so there is a risk of hitting your finger). I'd simply suggest you gently persuade your child to pick the stencil that suits your available time - if they love geckos you'll be there longer than a turtle as some are more complex than others. Ultimately if you run out of time the teacher can knock it off in 10 minutes. Total cost was $15 for one shadow puppet, with a teacher alongside him for the full two hours. We were there on Sunday morning, and from what they say they arr available all day for lessons, though may pay to call first

I went to the theatre with a group of local friends and children (age 5-9). The locals had tears in their eyes because the story was so beautifully told. I couldn't understand the spoken words, as it was in Khmer, but that didn't make any difference. Actually listening to the local music and language made the experience much better than if it had been in English. The music is beautiful. The dancing, masks and shadow puppetry is incredibly well done. The owner is a lovely guy and you can ask questions, try out the puppets and the musical instruments after the performance. I would definitely recommend coming to this theatre in stead of the big ones if you are looking for a more authentic and personal experience.

While geared more for locals than tourists, for $10 I had quite a few laughs. It was my firsr shadow puppet show and I was impressed. The show I saw was mainly in Khmer but we were given an English overview handout of the story beforehand so I was able to follow along. If you are looking for an amusing Cambodian l evening in Phnom Penh, check it out.

Like most place in South East Asia, if you do not have transport, it will slightly dangerous to walk alone at night. I almost got snatch theft leaving this place and walking back to my hostel alone. Overall the show is great, heard there new show, so with new show, there's more local crowd that came and enjoy the show. I not much into theatre, but I'm from Malaysia. It looks like 'wayang kulit'. If you heard about it, you know what I'm talking about. The owner speaks Khmer... And I don't understand anything which is sad. I was hoping to understand what he was saying or describe about the show. If this could improve slightly by accomodating the foreign customer, by translating it to English it would help promote it even larger scale. The seats are uncomfortable, the temperature is humid even with the fan blowing. Feels almost want to passed out. Don't take away from the performance, it was good. Not expert, but it was good. Really recommend if you are into this kind of thing. For me, from the Nearly Snatch Theft experience, and the language barrier. I just give it a 2 star for the performance alone. Other than that it's not worth $10 if I don't understand anything. But they give a summary earlier, but not much to understand clearly. Can be even better. Got potential to attract bigger crowd if they make it international.
