Overview
More
With over 1,200 animals including elephants, tigers, bears, gibbons, crocodiles and leopards, the wildlife rescue center is a fantastic day trip from Phnom Penh. Several all inclusive tours are available. The Behind-the-scenes tours with Wildlife Alliance allow access to private staff areas - tiger dens, nursery with the baby animals and an opportunity to be a human jungle gym for rescued macaque monkeys, elephant enclosure for hand feeding and watching gentle rewards based training as Chhouk's prosthetic foot is changed, and a personalized tour complete with rescue stories of the animals. This is a fundraising tour and 100% of profits go directly to the rescue, rehabilitation, care and release of wildlife. Tour information is shown above (see contact website and email). Volunteer and Bear Keeper for a Day programs are available with Free the Bears, allowing behind-the-scenes access with the sun and moon bears and profits go to their care. Check their website for more details. There are also several independent tour operators, or you can visit independently, although the centre coveres 6,000 acres and signs are yet to be finalised! Established in 1995 by the Cambodian Forestry Administration, the day to day running is now done in partnership with Wildlife Alliance, with specific animals cared for by other NGO's Free the Bears, Fauna & Flora International, Conservation International. Most animals at the center were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade by the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team, a patrol team created by Wildlife Alliance in coordination with the Cambodian Government. Where ever possible, rescued animals are released back into the wild, or if release is not possible they are given a home at the centre for as long as needed. Many of the species are listed as Endangered or Vulnerable and now part of important conservation breeding programs or act as ambassador animals to promote conservation.

We visited the Tamao Zoo after visiting the Chiso Mountain. Once we reached, some locals will sell food to feed the animals. I bought a bag of sweet potato which was used to feed the monkeys, deers and elephant. The place was quite big, we...More

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us and other travelers. Currently we don't have many signs up in English so you don't get to hear the personal stories of the animals without a guide, this is something we are working on changing this year...More

Have a great day interacting with the animals and know that your money is going to a good cause - saving wildlife from illegal trafficking and someone's dinner table or medicine chest (with much suffering in the process). These people rescue the animals, rehabilitate them...More

Dear Janet, Thank you for your review and support, 100% of profits from your tour go directly to keeping more animals off dinner plates and out of medicine cabinets, and back to the wild! We couldn't help as many as we do without your donation,...More

Lots of monkeys! They're everywhere, roaming free.....and locals trying to get you to buy food for the animals. Lots of bears, with some heartbreaking stories of where they were rescued from. The place is doing good but it needs a lot of help. Interesting but...More

Thanks for sharing your experience, we are glad your family was able to visit Phnom Tamao to see the animals. Our goal is always to release animals, with many of the free-roaming monkeys you saw being originally rescued from the illegal wildlife trades and released...More

We went on the tour today and, quite honestly, it was the best thing we have done since being in Cambodia. We did the behind the scenes Phnom Tamao Wildlife Tour. Yes it's expensive but we thought it was totally worth it because: 1. The...More

A good place to visit to see some of Cambodia's wildlife. It's a large area but that's not a problem as your Tuk Tuk can take you from place to place. Not all of it is in use and up to date like a western...More
