Again, not a must see, but I was having a walk and this is close to the Independence Monument so I checked it out. Again, another nice park, with a temple complex alongside it and the palace towards the far end. Worth a quick stop for a photo if you have time.

Just near my guesthouse, it's a kind of a propaganda monument to persuade khmers that the Vietnamese invaders are nice liberators, except they kinda never wanted to leave ...

We stayed very near to the Vietnam Friendship Monument which is also a few minutes’ walk to the Royal Palace. There were many people around this monument as it is situated in a park near the city center. Many kids were just hanging around and riding their skateboards. We came at night and it was very safe and families just lounging around. The temps in Phnom Penh are so hot during the day and thus the congregating at night. It is worth a few minutes to go and take some snaps of the area and monument.

Wlaked to this monument from riverside. Been here 10 days now and it was easy to find for me.

It's in the middle of a central walkway, within easy walking distance from the Kings Palace etc.

Nice and clean, well kept. Places to sit and chill for a while. Loads of local places to eat as well as re-hydrate.

No cost to see this monument as it's within an very public area.

Ticked it off from my list of to do things... loads of info can be got from local tourist leaflets and travel guidebooks if you want to know more about the monument.

Located on a wide boulevard to the south of the Royal Palace, this monument commemorates the fall of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in the 1970’s. The boulevard is a fantastic open space, lined with gardens and pathways. In the centre is a gold-topped tower, located in a small basin of shallow water. On the south side of the tower a simple statue of soldiers and a woman and child form the centrepiece of the monument.
After visiting the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields, it was nice to see something positive to come from the dark days of the Pol Pot regime. A nice part of Phnom Penh and a nice attraction.

The monument stands in thimble of a normal "place in French" where you will normally pass through if you walk around the city centre. Nothing special, but it is 200 meters away from the unmissable Independence Monument; heading by foot to the riverfront.

For some, this is just another monument. For others, this is a symbol of a difficult history and sign of struggle. Cambodia and Viet Nam had turned a page in history to defeat the Khmer' Rouge after over 10 years of war and occupation. Million lives had lost and this monument is the only thing to show that commitment. Come by, take a photo, enjoy the artistry and the sight, but take a moment to remember this small fact.

There was a time when Cambodians were murdering each other for sport. Pol Pot & his band of Khmer Rouge peasants were a bad smell nobody wanted a scent of, not the United Nations or even the USA. In came the Vietnamese crashing over the border in their T-54 tanks blasting Khmer Rouge heads left, right & center to save Cambodia from its darkest hour & helping to put an end to the worst genocide of mass killings since the Holocaust in WW2.

Built in Soviet Realism style to commemorate the Vietnamese smackdown of the Khmer Rouge in 1979, the Vietnam-Cambodian Friendship Monument is of a Vietnamese & Cambodian soldier standing together in sort of a protective stance over a Khmer woman & child, overshadowed by a Buddhist stupa above featuring Thai-style roof ornaments. The monument is in amongst a wide open space & public park. It's a nice place to sit around in the afternoon to catch a bit of cool wind or just to people-watch local families, couples & the occasional tourist.

It is apparently not very well liked by many Khmers who see Vietnam as a threat to Cambodian sovereignty, while visiting Vietnamese tourists look over it with a deep sense of pride & saddness at the 15,000 Vietnamese soldiers who died to liberate Cambodia from Pol Pot. Most would think a statue of peace & friendship commemorating the defeat of the Khmer Rouge would be something worth celebrating?

The monument has been attacked several times with the most recent in 2007 when some guy tried to blow it up with TNT but forgot to do it properly & merely scratched it. In 1998 protesters climbed up the statue & tried to destroy it with hammers, when this failed they tried to burn it down with petrol. I suppose these poor people didn't realise that concrete & marble are very hard objects.

Spend a moment to think about the madness of the whole Khmer Rouge carnage. It is a shame that some people forget the horrors of The Killing Fields & choose a monument dedicated to their liberators both Viet & brave Cambodians to cast their anger at, I hear drinking tea & regular exercise is good for stress.

From my observation, lots of Cambodians do not care for the Vietnamese people. This is ironic because at least VN saved them from Pol Pot. Oh well. Don' go out of your way for this one. Nothing exciting to do or see.

I drive by it frequently and it is an ugly monument which does nothing but remind one of the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia. The monument is of that coarse proletariat style which does not fit in with the many graceful building of this city
