This castle is part of the experience getting there. ‘There’ being about 30 minutes from downtown Baku. You will see the REAL Azerbaijan going to and from. It’s located in the backblocks. The dystopian oil fields, wastelands and grinding poverty are there for all to see. A world away from the Louis Vuitton shops of downtown Baku. We even encountered a fleet of helicopter gunships which passed over the castle. Be sure to tour around the local oil fields (refer: Boom City) which are in the surrounding suburbs. Plus it’s possible to also encompass the Mardakan Fortress (refer: Mardakan Castle) as well in the same morning.

When you think of a castle, you might think of a huge castle but this isn’t that. It’s kind of small but you can explore the whole thing. Be aware that the steps going up the castle are tiny at times

The way up to Ramana Castle is a bit tricky. Finally you come through a settlement with friendly people and streets getting more and more narrow. Ramana Castle is not in a very good state and is probably in itself not worth a trip, but from up there you have an excellent view of the plain below. Down there you can discern an army of oil pumps that have caused terrible destruction. In any case I remember great damages done to nature in the oil fields.

This fortress sits atop a hill and it quite huge once your next to it. Not much to see but worth the drive to see. Make sure to see the lady in the red house to get inside. 2 manat per person.

There is not too much to see. Unfortunately, it was closed and we didn't not find anyone in the village who would be able to let us in. However, I don't think we missed much since inside of the tower is not much to see. You can walk around. It's a neat village and I liked the surrounding. It's also great to see some of the old and new oil fields - it's a really impressive sight. I'm glad we came here.

This 12th century building is not a castle but a tower. Perched high up on a hill it was built to defend the castle during the Shirvanshahs’ reign. The views are of the oil fields used in the filming of the Bond film 'The World Is Not Enough'. If you want to climb the steps you can get the key from the gate keeper in the house nearby, but they are pretty dangerous and the view will still be only oil wells.

Ramana Castle as a castle is not a huge building and it is not close to Baku. Based on some comparison with area(Georgia, Turkey and Iran) it is not a big deal...

This is a beautifully preserved old fortress that now overlooks the oil fields. The lady who looks after the place will unlock the gate and you are welcome to climb the treacherous steps to what seems to have been the living room. No safety features and some alarming drops, but be careful and you can enjoy the view from the outer walls. Definitely worth a visit!

A well located fortification with excellent views over the oil fields, towards the Ramana community. One of many castles and towers on the Absheron Peninsula dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries.

Visited the Ramana Qasri, a watch tower. From the tower we saw many oil rigs. The view was okay nothing spectacular. There’s nothing much to see from the tower or do around the area. One will not miss much if he doesn’t include this place in the itinerary.
