- ValeCagliari, Italy4,440 contributionsThe fifteenth century palace, has been recognized by UNESCO, World Heritage Site, unfortunately only a few intact rooms have been preserved, because of the numerous bombings, originally it had to be much larger. Inside the rooms, there are several ancient objects, typical Azerbaijani, not to be missed. In the complex there are also two mausoleums, one of the Shirvanshahs, very beautiful, and a second of the Sufi master Sayid Yahya Bakuvi, but you can also admire a beautiful mosque, and spa. I absolutely recommend a view, the place is beautiful and deserves so much.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 29, 2024
- Ирина ЗPutilkovo, Russia230 contributionsOne of the main attractions of the old town. The palace dates from the 13th-16th centuries. It is now a museum spread over 3 sites. The cost of visit for foreigners is 15 manat, a separate fee for viewing the treasury is 10 manat.Visited January 2025Traveled soloWritten January 25, 2025
- Lina2002Samara, Russia184 contributionsThe cost of visiting the palace separately is 15 manats. Without a tour, the palace is not particularly interesting, although there is a description of the rooms including in Russian. Unfortunately, there's no audio guide. The complex includes the palace itself, the courtyard, the mausoleum.Visited October 2024Traveled with friendsWritten October 11, 2024
- Richard BEdinburgh, United Kingdom5,549 contributionsA beautiful 'old world' complex that sits in the old town of Baku. A tour around the palace complex should take about an hour (maybe longer if you are slow and taking it easy). A worthwhile endeavour when in Baku. The Unesco World Heritage site should be a 'must' when in town.Visited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 4, 2024

This palace is located within the old city of Baku. You have to purchase an entry ticket plus an audio guide is also available. A regular guide who will take you around is also available for 20 AZN currency. We opted for that. As any old structure this was also grand and within the walled city. The guide explained the history of the palace and the Shah’s and showed is the different rooms including some jewellery and carpet displays. The palace had some tombs of the family of the Shah. Also had an baths area. Overall a good place to visit and see the history of Baku. Can be done within an hour.

I was really fortunate when I visited the Palace of The Shirvanshahs, I had the place to myself. I visited late afternoon and paid 15 Manat to enter and didn’t find the price to be too excessive. That said, the cost quickly rises if you’re travelling as a family or in a group and the perceived value for money may then be affected.
The architecture of the building is beautiful, showcasing the craftsmanship of those who initially created it back in the 15th Century and those who more recently restored it. It is now a UNESCO world heritage site. The footprint of the palace is really quite big and gives the visitor a lot to explore. Each of the rooms inside the main palace have different exhibits, all beautifully displayed and labelled. I really enjoyed wandering around. I appreciate my experience was hugely improved by having the palace to myself. I’m not sure I would have been left with the same impression had there been lots of other visitors there at the same time.
Outside the main building are lots of other areas and grounds to explore, some containing artefacts and tombs. I found the grounds and gardens to be really peaceful with plenty of photo opportunities.
There is a small gift shop inside the main building, the items for sale were in my opinion a bit over priced and not necessarily unique to that location.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage List Site, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs is a complex well worth visiting. Apart from the palace itself, it has a number of other parts such as mausoleum, mosque, shrine, baths, etc. The museum side has good displays and I particularly liked the scale model of the Old Town.

Great building and nice staff.
Even we did not go the e-guide or a local guide, the local guide inside was trying always to explain to us and help us.
The building and the area around it have a long history and interesting links with many major civilizations.

I did not actually enter the palace itself, as it was closed at the time of my visit. However there is a fantastic viewpoint just next to the palace. From this spot, you can see four different eras of architecture in Azerbaijan's history. See if you can spot the Safavid/Persian, Imperial Russian, Soviet/Brutalist, and Modern Azerbaijan buildings in my accompanying photos!

The main palace has many rooms, but each room is small and only has 2 or 3 artifacts describing the culture. Despite the claims that Baku used to be culturally important, the art pieces displayed are rather lacklustre. At the side, a building with a debated purpose stands, with no information provided whatsoever, one is just there to admire the architecture.

It's very unusual to see in a big city like Baku a beautiful historical palace of Shirvanshahs empire.Architecture and the rooms inside, ruins of royal hamam, mausoleum make you imagine that old times and how people had lived during the empire. Entrance fee is 10manat.

You are in "Icherisheher", the inner walled city of Baku, and just about to enter the old palace of the kings of Shirvan ... In the 15th century, right after a devastating earthquake, Shah Ibrahim I of Shirvan transferred his capital from Shemakha to Baku, where he built his new palace! And this is exactly the "Palace of the Shirvanshahs", which was appointed by Unesco, in 2000, as a "World Heritage Site", when it was described as one of the pearls of Azerbaijan's traditional architecture. The actual complex comprises the palace itself, a mosque with a single minaret, remnants of the royal bath houses, the throne hall, exhibitions rooms, burial vaults and mausoleums - all surrounded by restored sandstone walls and domes. A real journey into the 15th century! Enjoy!

Very well managed and maintained place. Gives a clear overview of the olden era and the values of the Azeri culture.
Every room had representative to clear your doubts apart from guides you can hire from outside for additional charges.
School children have different entry fees compared to adults even though its nominal.
They also have souvenir shops inside the palace.

Is it easy to see the palace with babystroller or need all the time to carry it in the stairs???
Written April 14, 2018
I have been to Baku and return recently. Practically you park the babystroller in the open yard after you take our ticket. From there you will enter the Palace fom the main entrance and an other two small entrances to see the adjustment buildings.
You are not allowed to take stroller with you at all since the passages are very narrow with stairs. You just have to park it in the yard and shift(parents) or simply take the kid walking if it is big enough. In our case she was sleeping and that was perfect.
