- LuizDutraNetoRio de Janeiro, RJ8,621 contributionsAn absolutely legendary Tower! The 12th century's "Maiden Tower" is absolutely a symbol of Baku and of its "Old Town"! As its real origin and initial purposes are totally uncertain, legends and mysteries surround the monument. Since Zoroastrianism was practiced in ancient Azerbaijan, some believe it may have been a "Fire Temple" (as the "Ategash Fire Temple" near Baku) or a "Tower of Silence" (for sky burials, as seen in Yazd, Iran and Mumbai, India). Legends of true loves, of impossible loves or even incestuous loves and so on are told about this beautiful monument. Today, "Maiden Tower" houses a museum, telling Baku's history at every one of its floors. Climb its spiral staircases, visit the museum and reach the terrace, where awesome views of Baku and the Caspian Sea await you. No wonder, together with the "Palace of the Shirvanshahs", "Maiden Tower" was appointed by Unesco, in 2000, as a "World Heritage Site". Unmissable! Enjoy!Visited September 2019Written May 23, 2020
- TheLush101Cardiff, United Kingdom2,183 contributionsMust seeA must see in the centre of Baku's Old City. It's fairly easy to find whether you wander down here from the Old City, or walk in from the modern waterfront boulevard. There are still debates about what the original reason for the construction of the tower was, but on visiting it, you can get a ticket from the kiosk opposite, then head in and up the steps. There are several floors with exhibits before you reach the top, which has great panoramic views of the city.Visited September 2019Written February 23, 2020
- busybee2775Brooklyn, New York152 contributionsforever legendI have not visited it in almost 40 years so don't recall well if a lot more has been done in the museum but was nice to ascend the tower with each floor telling the continuation of the story. I still refer the fairytale of the maiden who leaped to her death for love than it just being a watch tower. The architecture outside is just stunning and the view from the top is great.Visited July 2022Written July 29, 2022

The stairs you need to climb to the top, history and interesting facts displayed on every floor on the way to the top - very authentic and interesting experience.

During my recent visit to Baku, Azerbaijan, I had the opportunity to explore Maiden Tower Downtown Baku, located in the historic Old City. While the location was advantageous, I found my overall experience to be somewhat lackluster.
Firstly, the staff at Maiden Tower Downtown Baku were polite but lacked the warmth and friendliness that I had expected. Their interactions felt somewhat transactional, and I didn't feel a genuine sense of hospitality. It would have been nice to receive a more welcoming and personalized experience.
The rooms at the hotel were adequate, but they lacked the charm and character that one would hope for in a historic area like the Old City. The furnishings were basic, and the décor was uninspiring. Additionally, I encountered some maintenance issues, such as malfunctioning air conditioning and plumbing problems. These issues disrupted my comfort and should have been addressed promptly.
Another aspect that left room for improvement was the breakfast offered at the hotel. While there was a variety of items available, the quality and presentation were mediocre. The selection lacked creativity and freshness, and the dining area felt cramped and congested. It would have been beneficial if the hotel could enhance the breakfast experience by focusing on improving the quality of the offerings and creating a more inviting atmosphere.
On a positive note, the location of Maiden Tower Downtown Baku was a highlight. Being situated in the historic Old City allowed for easy exploration of the nearby attractions, shops, and restaurants. The convenience of being within walking distance of key landmarks added value to my stay.
In terms of value for money, Maiden Tower Downtown Baku fell somewhat short. Given the average quality of the rooms, lackluster service, and underwhelming breakfast experience, the hotel's pricing felt somewhat inflated.
In summary, Maiden Tower Downtown Baku in Baku, Azerbaijan, offers a mediocre experience overall. While the hotel's location in the Old City is advantageous, the lack of personalized service, maintenance issues, and uninspiring rooms detract from the overall appeal. With improvements in service quality, maintenance, and breakfast offerings, the hotel has the potential to provide a more satisfying experience for guests.

Great views from the top of the tower. As you climb the tower there was information on most levels so the climb up was staggered. Information was ok although not particularly interesting. Worth visiting for views from the top and of course photos of it from the ground.

It was good to see this and even better to climb the stairs to the top for the view. There explanatory panels on each floor as you go up - read them for a rest on the way!
See if you can find the well going down through the walls.

The climb to the top on a 30+ degree day was not appealing, but it's in sections and while stuffy you do have a nice breeze at times and the view at top is rewarding.

An essential on a Baku visit and worth the fairly easy steps both for the excellent information in the tower and the spectacular views from the top. Well maintained and clean albeit a little pricey for a small site.
