I love Azerbaijan, I love Baku.
I visited this amazing country in july 2016, I lived 7 magical days and now I look back with longging because it was one of the great experience I've ever lived.
What was so fabulous?
The architecture: the old style combines picturesquely with the new one, so the first reaction when I left the airport was: I feel that I live '' One thousand and one nights" fairy tale, but on the other hand my eyes saw a spactacular modern arhitecture. The people (locals) was so friendly and the food was really delicious; I still didn't understand ' what's up ' with that hot tea morning to noon and evening, in the middle of summer, but I give a grade of 10 for gastronomy and hospitality.
Heydar Alyiev Cultural Center is magnificent from the outside, but if you want to have a complete idea go inside (is not so spectacular like the outer part, but it's worth visiting) for a tour to find out more about life and culture of Azerbaijan.
The Flame Tower and the Old city outlined me once again, the first feeling, that I am a tourist in an Arabic country, but in 21th century.
Gobustan&Absharom are a proof an ancient life and places with a special historical load and I recommend it those who love history and consider the human evolution.
Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum is still wallpaper on my phone and when I begin to talk with people about Azerbaijan I start with this amazing edifice and Cultural Center. It's a sort of imagination, technology and engineering!
If you love nature, hills and mountains, Gabala&Shamakhi are great places to breath fresh air, to take amazing pictures around the rocks and water. Furthermore, Sheki tour is a good combination between impressive buildings, history, nautre and good food. The locals have for sale many special sweets and spices.
To sum up, except one thing, a strong cult of personality of the leader, that is very visible, Azerbaijan is a creat destination for a dream vacation.

We did a Walking Tour of the Baku Old City through GuruWalk with Namiq. He did a great job guiding us through the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, teaching us about the old city, showing us Maiden Tower. He took us inside local artist, Ali Shamsi's shop and translated Ali Shamsi's stories about each piece of art which was fantastic and a highlight for us. The stories and the symbolism behind each piece of art only added to the depth and beauty of each piece! I eneded up having to buy a painting to take home the visit made such an impression on me. He gave us restaurant recommendations and must-try local food recommendations. He gave us tips on buying souvenirs. Namiq even offered to extend his day with us to take us to Yanar Dag/burning mountain and the Atashgah Zoroastrian Fire Temple and joined us for dinner helping us order the best local food off the menu, which freed up a day to add even more to our travel adventures!

We ate breakfast one day in the old city. We shopped here for souvenirs, honey, teas, handicrafts made by local artists at Folk Arts. Folk Arts had lots of Christmas Ornaments to choose from as well as a wide array of other unique items not found at any of the other touristy souvenir shops.

Baku old city or the area of Icherisheher is an absolute gem to explore. The area includes the old city walls, Maiden Tower and the Shirvanshahs Palace, as well as an abundance of restaurants, gift shops and cafes. The area is beautifully kept with all the old buildings restored to their former glory.
The area also has a labyrinth of alleyways which are all fun to explore. No matter the time of day, this area, like the rest of Baku is completely safe to wander around in. It is definitely worth spending some time here both through the day and at night.
Once darkness falls all the historical buildings are illuminated making the whole area take on a new and very beautiful appearance.

For a cultural heritage site, its' not wonderful. The old city is filled with bars, restaurants, etc that modernize the place. My assumption is that for a small fee you can get business up here, without paying much attention to the ancient aspect of things. Many heritage sites are touristic -- but few have sacrificed their local characters so thoroughly

Hey everyone,

I'm here to share my experience about Baku old city.

If you are looking for a place to visit, Baku old city is the best option. The old town of Baku is located on the shore of the Caspian Sea. The old town has many historical buildings, mosques and other attractions that make it one of the most beautiful places in Azerbaijan.

The most famous part of Baku is Icheri Sheher that was established in the fifteenth century. The area has many historical buildings such as caravanserais, bathhouses and palaces that are still used today. There are also many museums that feature artifacts from ancient times such as pottery and jewelry made from gold or silver.

There are also many places where you can enjoy yourself such as parks where children play on swings or slides; cafes where adults meet friends over coffee and pastry; restaurants where they eat dinner together after work; nightclubs where they dance until dawn; theaters where they watch plays based on classic novels like Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy or War & Peace by Leo Tolstoy; cinemas showing foreign films such as Titanic starring Leonardo DiCaprio; art galleries featuring paintings by famous artists like Salvador Dali.

In December 2000, the Old City of Baku also called Icheri Sheher , including the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Maiden Tower, became the first location in Azerbaijan to be classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.It is widely accepted that the Old City, including its Maiden Tower, date at least to the 12th century, with some researchers contending that construction dates as far back as the 7th century.Took a walk along the entire length of Old City(Icheri Sheher) visiting the historical edifices on the way which included Maiden Tower.Last visit was to the Palace of Shirvanshahs and from there made a exit out of the Fortress walled old City.

Baku first surprised me by being very Dubai alike with all if these new and modern buildings. I was a bit sorry because I like to see historical places of a country and in the old town I found them.

Not only the city preserves its heart, it is also very well kept, beautifully illuminated and just very pleasant to walk in. Loved it !

For me part of the fun about walking around the old town is getting lost and seeing different things every time you walk through. This allows you to see different areas of the old town. Don’t worry, you’ll run into a city wall and will be able to find your way back to where you want to be

The city walls, Shervanshah's palace complex, the mosques and the Maiden tower are all reminders of the cultural and historical story of Baku, a centre of trade on the silk route and fought over many times. There are the usual merchants eager to sell you tourist tat but it's fun just to wander the narrow streets and look at the old walls. the tourist bureau is hopeless. The girl on the desk specialised in too much lipstick but had no useful informaition except to point us to websites we could have found oursleves! They do offer audioguides which can be acivated at various markers around the city. That is porbably better than one of the many guided tours you might be offered. Haggle for anything you buy!
There is an open fronted cafe where a lady makes delicious kutabs, thin pastries filled with meat, cheese or herbs. Not cheap but very colourful atmosphere, good to eat and very good Trurkish coffee.
Qaynana make fresh baked bread in a tandoor and is largely used by locals. Open from 8 am for breakfast
