It would seem that the museum is often partially or totally closed. When I went there, the only thing open was the mansion and you had to pay the full whack to wander aimlessy around trying to garner some information. I would check to see if it's fully open before going, or rather not going!

I paid the full 10 manat to enter, only to find that the main exhibition (the history of Azerbaijan) was closed, leaving me with the house (which is beautiful enough, but no explanations or descriptions are given anywhere) and 2 rooms about their war with Armenia. When I enquired, the lady in the ticket office shoved a piece of paper in front of me that said it was closed. No other explanation. Total scam.

The museum is really worth to visit. There are two floors and each has different exhibitions. Actually there are three parts of this museum. 1st floor: 2nd Garabagh war, 2nd floor: H.Z. Taghiyev’s house, 3rd: History of Azerbaijan.
As a student I paid 2 ₼ for entrance. However, the staff was not patient and it disappointed me. When I entered the museum I said hello to staff members and they just stared at my face then answered (much more whispered). While I was recording a video there were shouting each other from a place to the other. It felt like I was in a street or somewhere else. Unfortunately, because of the staff, I didn’t really feel like I was in a museum.

That's not a National museum, that's someone's house. It's not worth 10 manat for three rooms. Apparently, the museum is closed or doesn't exist, there is no info about it at the entrance or at the ticket office. Actually there are no information stands whatsoever.

I liked the exhibition, especially if you read it; just looking is not enough if you are not a historian. I spent 3 hours there with pleasure. But the staff is strange. Entrance is for cash only, but they didn’t give me a receipt or the ticket itself (??). The caretakers speak only Azerbaijani and get annoyed when you don’t understand. They point a finger at the door, which turns out to be an exit, not a continuation of the exhibition. I missed a few rooms on the top floor. Upset. Don't believe them, find a diagram of the halls))

Like many museums in Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijan History Museum that's located in the former mansion of an oil baron Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, is a very informative experience that will enrich your knowledge and understanding of Azerbaijan and the region. The collections are extensive and fairly well preserved. Me and especially my wife were very satisfied and even stunned by the richness of historical artefacts and well thoughtout chronology. With that said, also like all museums in Azerbaijan, they are not as good as presenting and interpreting the information for non-Azerbaijani and non-Russian speakers. The English language presentations can be improved, as can be the website, which was hacked for many months. Still, a great experience, and if you are truly a history buff, plan for at least 3 hours to be able to process the wealth of information. One last thing - H.J.Taghiyev had a good taste and his mansion is everything that comes to mind when we think of oil barons.

We visited the Taghiyev History Museum last week while in Baku. The museum is amazing, the wealth that was here and the bloody history that happened as well. It’s a beautiful former home, very regal and luxurious with lots of great information, lots in English showing all realms of Azerbaijani history. The history of the region is marked like most countries histories, this is a good view of how Azerbaijan sees it and great to learn about Taghiyevs’ empire and philanthropy. 100% worthwhile museum to visit, take a guided tour, it is even better with the guides they have and plan on about two hours to see and do it all.

We visited the museum because of the positive reviews on google and TripAdvisor. However, for us it was a deception. The third of the museum as closed/not accessible. The rooms of the former owner were open, but there was no description or other information available. Not worth the visit.

What is the nearest metro station to the museum please? Or is it an easy walk from the Old City?
Written October 24, 2015
Içeri Sehar is the nearest metro but the museum is right in the centre of the city just off Fountain Square, easy to get to. About 6 minutes walk from the old city. A taxi will have to drive quite a distance because of the one way system.
