You can see this beige cubical building on Dilara Aliyeva Street. It is a 3 story building which was inaugurated in 2003. It was built for the Ashkenazi and Europen Jews. The message was sent to the rest of the world that while Europe was expelling Jews and burning their synagogues Baku was creating a welcoming space for them. This building has two prayer halls one for the Georgian Jews and the other one for Ashkenazi or European Jews. There is a religious library and a research centre here too. There is a kosher mess which can be used to feed around 70 people at a time. I really liked the ideology of this building.

We stumbled across this synagogue by chance while walking back to the Old City from the Taza Bazaar, so we went in to take a look. We met some people inside and had a nice chat with them, about the Jewish community in Baku (which numbers far higher than we had thought!) and in general about how life is like for Jews in Azerbaijan (which turns out to be quite good!). This wasn't something on our list of things to see, but I'm very happy that we came across it by chance.

My family and I came from Israel to Baku for Passover. Well, as it turns out, we entered the synagogue. We were met by a “friendly” man named Ilgar. To the question, where are you holding your Easter event? The answer was, “There are no more tickets and you can’t attend the celebration.” It’s funny, isn’t it? When Maisey led the people out of slavery, did he sell tickets to march through the desert? To Ilgar, the caretaker of the Baku Ashkenazi synagogue, ardent greetings and more intelligence....
