Pleasant to the eyes

Dedicated to Khurshidbanu Natavan, one of Azerbaijan’s best poets. She is also the daughter of the last Khan of Karabakh. The monument is in the heart of Baku's main area, the Nizami street. When you first see it you will definitely remember the monument of queen Victoria in front of Buckingham palace, ok, maybe just a little bit

I like the sitting pose
Oct 2019 • Solo
Ok it's right in front of Hard Rock Cafe. You obsoletely can not miss it. It's my type of sculpture it's sitting down. But who is Natavan? Khurshidbanu Natavan is considered one of the best lyrical poets of Azerbaijan whose poems are in Persian and Azerbaijani. Daughter of Mahdiqoli Khan, the last ruler of the Karabakh khanate, Natavan was most notable for her lyrical ghazals.
She also did a lot for the development and popularization of the famous breed of Karabakh horses.
Beware visiting in the morning results in poor photos.

Standing in front of the Hard Rock Cafe is this imposing statue is of Princess Natavan. She composed poems in the form of ghazals and ruba’yat in Persian and Azerbaijani languages She invested highly in popularizing the horse breed, Karabakh, which eventually came to be known as the best horse in Azerbaijan. She earned recognition as a great philanthropist, contributing towards the development of Shusha. She set up a water source in Shusha, in 1883, to overcome water woes in the region.

This is a decent monument, near the old town, which provides a lovely photo-op thanks to the Hard Rock Cafe behind it.

A Renaissance Woman!
Aug 2017 • Family
The Natavan Monument is one of my favorites because it features a famous Azerbaijani poetess. Khurshidbanu Natavan was a nineteenth century lyrical poetess who wrote romantic poems in her first and melancholic ones in her second phase of life. She was called Khan gizi" ( "Daughter of Khan) because she was the daughter of the last Khan of Karabakh. She was a true Renaissance Woman. In addition to poetry she did intricate embroidery, knew many European and Eastern languages and ran the first stud farm of Karabakh. She did a lot for the welfare of people like building water works, opening schools and building hospitals. This monument was erected outside the Azerbaijan Cinema in 1960. It was crafted by the Soviet sculptor Omar Eldarov. I loved the way the great poetess is shown sitting regally with a poignant expression on her face.
A must see!
