Our guide, Nurlan, was amazing. He was prompt, well-versed, friendly and super accommodating when we wanted to stop back at our hotel for an unplanned bio break. He paced the tour well, provided useful background, and catered to the different interests of our group. The entire family highly recommends this tour with Nurlan!

This tour was on my fourth day in Azerbaijan, and my third tour with Guided Azerbaijan - Nurlan was such a great guide that I was happy he took this one too. The day started with hotel pickup and about an hour drive to Juma Mosque. From there we headed north into the Caucus mountains and went to Sheki to see the palace and the caravansarie. Sheki was a very important stop on the Silk Road trade route because the climate of the area is perfect for the growth of mulberry trees, which happen to the perfect home for silk worms. In fact, silk production is still an industry in this area. We stopped in Sheki at the halva shop - and that stuff is phenomenal! I brought back treats for my friends back home and they are still talking about it - it’s just that good. We left Sheki and went to Kish to see the Christian church there. Nurlan once again was fantastic and full of information that really made it come alive for me. It’s lovely and peaceful and nearly unadorned. It’s a museum now and there are relics housed there from its past life. I loved this little spot, it touched my heart. Make no mistake, this is a LONG day. In fact, they offer this as a two day tour and if I’d had the time I’d have stretched it into two days so I could have appreciated it more. Also, as a note to less experienced travelers, the further you get from Baku, the less… luxurious… things become. Bring a few packets of travel Kleenex and be prepared for the squat style toilets. It’s an adventure.

The day started with Nurlan, the guide, and our driver picking me up at my hotel. It’s a nice touch and I appreciated it. We drove out to Gobustan to see the mud volcanos and the rock art. We stopped at an intersection to pick up a taxi to take us out to the mud volcanos. It was this little purple Lada that had to be as old as me, and I’m not young. It felt a little sketchy at first, but go with it - it’s one of the funnest parts of the day. You bounce around this unpaved, heavily rutted/washed out area to get to the volcanos. You hike up the side of the volcano just a little and you can hear that “blurb blurb” sound of pockets of air escaping through the mud. It’s fantastic. And the view out to the Caspian Sea is amazing. We head back and pick up our car and drive over to the museum and petroglyphs. From everything found in this area, archeologists have been able to piece together the story of this region reaching back thousands and thousands of years. Standing in a place with such deep roots in history and the evidence of the people who have lived there… it will reach into you. Especially as Nurlan is there to give you so much insight and context to everything. And a strong arm when you need a hand in a few of the tougher spots during the hike. On the way back to Baku we were able to stop at for prayers (if so inclined) and then headed out to Ateshgah to visit the Fire Temple. Again - this is one of those places so full of history - and Nurlan really provides great information without making you feel like your in a lecture. It’s a great conversation. We left there and headed to Yanar Dag to see the live fire that still burns as the heart of Azerbaijan. I had a moment here. It was peaceful and calm and a little rainy. I sat and watched the flames and felt so connected to a moment in history. On the way back to the hotel we made a stop at the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center to appreciate the architecture of this beautiful, female-designed building. And really, I <3 Baku. Thanks Fuad for letting Nurlan be my guide for the day, he’s amazing at what he does.

This turned out to be a last minute booking, but Fuad was fantastic and set me up with Nurlan - an amazing guide. We started near the Flame Towers, walked down the Alley of Martyrs and stopped at the Fire Tower. The tour progressed through the old town and I saw the twin gates to the city, multiple statues of Azerbaijani writers and eventually the National Literature Museum (my personal favorite). Maiden Tower was great and Nurlan told me multiple theories about its original intended use. I had a very limited idea of what Baku would be like, I thought the influence of Soviet occupation would have made the city much harsher and less rich, but I was wrong. Nurlan taught me so much about the city, its history, and the beautiful people who call it home. I could not have asked for a better guide.
