I'm still confused. It seems to me that there is no museum curator or they wanted to exhibit all their collection at once. For a foreigner, my impression is that you will leave the museum without understanding which art movements were dominant, who were who, etc. Also, i was so confused by the displaying that I didnt even noticed the wall with 3 Picasso, 1 or 2 Chagall and Dali. Maybe a guided tour with an Azeri art specialist would be a completely different experience.

A very reasonable entrance fee with a huge collection. As with modern art, not all to our taste. We enjoyed the few Picasso pieces and Salvatore Dali. But many other artists from the regions as well. The space is beautiful and worth a visit if you have time.

Tickets are not expensive, different art pieces to see, lots of nice paintings too, so quiet and relaxing atmosphere, definitely worth to check.

Last day of my stay, after visiting the center of Baku I decided to visit this museum. Curious to see the only three European works. I have basic English and at the ticket office I realized that I could take photos but not videos and that there was a Picasso painting on the second floor. Nowhere is it indicated where you can and cannot take photographs. The museum is filled with modern Azerbaijani works of art. So full, but without a map or a common thread. Among other things, the names of the authors are grouped at the corners of the rooms and not next to the work. At a certain point a guard approached me while I was looking at a painting and told me "no photos". I replied that I didn't take the photo, meaning that specific painting. He asked me to show him the phone. I gave him the phone and in the gallery he told me to delete the photos taken of Picasso's painting. I deleted them. Now I say, I'm European, used to visiting the Louvre, the Uffizi etc. They let me photograph the monnalisa and if you come to my area you'll be amazed by how many Picassos we have. Even at the MoMA in New York they allow you to photograph the works and you take my phone to make me delete the photos! Then you're not a fox... you make the whole scene and you don't know that the deleted photos go in the trash. Which I remembered coming out of the museum. Furthermore, there is no shop, because I'm also fine with the fact that your policy is not to have some works photographed, but allow me to purchase the postcard. But no. Even the inside bar was closed. Baku is a beautiful city, but these situations make it clear how far they are from turning it into a tourist destination. The museum is far from the center. Ticket price 5 manats (about 3 euros).

The interior design of museums/galleries is often of more interest to me than the exhibition itself, & this MOMA does make for a beautiful backdrop, such a cheery, light & airy space. The artworks, a mix of Azerbaijan & European pieces, are pretty crammed in, which I rather like. As other reviewers have mentioned, the guards do keep a watchful eye, & one did approach me to point out where photography was not permitted. The cafe, which I'd read good reviews about, was closed, without any explanation as to why.
Throughly enjoyed my visit regardless, & at 5AZN, well worth a look.

The essence of modern art, experimentation, designs and sculptures are placed on this beautiful museum, the entrance and elevation of the building itself is so amazing, it appeals to aesthetic sense and is pleasant to see. There is an admission ticket and a toilet is also available. There is a small shop selling souvenirs. A must visit to understand the vibrant and progressive life style of Baku and its people.

Really excellent museum with LOTS of works of modern art. Mostly local artists but with a few from Dali, Picasso, and Chagall. There is a movie about some of the artists featured in the museum as well but it is really long, slow and not all that insightful. If you like modern art this is a must see.

I went first thing on a Sunday morning (it opens at 11) and had it to myself for 2 hours. Magical.

Wonderful space - two floors with large atrium in middle like a glasshouse, green plants and white walls showing off the art magnificently. One of the staff members was nicely attentive, wanting to practice his English on me, and was most helpful. I had a coffee from the cafe too which was lovely and allowed me to sit in the peace and quiet and take in the space.

Whether you like modern art or not I would recommend this place for the building and the ambience. It took me 15 mins max to walk from the area of the Park Inn / Hilton hotels. Entry was 5 Manats.

Having visited modern art museums in many countries, I was really eager to see what this place had to offer. Unfortunately not much. The building, although impressive felt like it detracted the art, which in itself was fairly limited.

My visit was ruined when I was rudely told to not take photos of the Picasso and Dali displays by security, despite there not being any signage indicating this. Guards follow you everywhere.

Information is lacking around the displays.

The cafe was shut as well.

Entrance is only 5 AZN which is ok ... considering the experience that followed.

If I could give this museum a zero or better a -10 I would. I went by uber-like taxi to the Museum first thing today. It was initially pleasant with nice people at the desk. The ticket seller told me I could photograph all the first floor and most of the second floor without flash. She also oddly said the third floor was okay but it turns out there isn't a third floor. Speaking in English there is a bit of an issue. I was almost alone since there were perhaps less than 7 visitors. I was not impressed with the collection which seemed to vastly value quantity over quality. I usually take lots of pictures in a museum but it was a struggle to find much in this place. When I was on the second floor I took a picture and suddenly a guard came up quickly behind me from another room and started shouting. Since he could not speak English it was not clear what he was upset about. He came up to me quite aggressively and stood uncomfortably close and started shouting "ERASE" "ERASE" it was very startling and I had to fumble for my glasses and try to figure out the way to erase which I actually didn't know how to do. I erased one picture and then he moved around too close so he could see my camera. He shouted erase again and then I had enough. I said no and I demanded to see a manager. By this time four more guards came up to back him up. I am a 66 year old Canadian and there was no other safe person nearby. It felt like I was re-living Soviet Azerbaijan. Being surrounded by 5-6 angry guards who don't speak English is quite intimidating. I should point out that there are NO SIGNS saying "no photography" and no restricted areas were identified. No one, including the ticket lady told me where this would be prohibited. I assumed the area would be marked. The guards clearly saw me as some criminal trying to intentionally break the rules. After a while a young manager came. She was polite and explained that there were two areas where you cannot take photos. I asked her why these weren't identified in any way. She admitted it was their fault for not putting up signs with "no photography allowed" or identifying the area. She said she had seen these signs in European and American art museums. I told her the guards needed to stop following me and staring at me and she said they would. I said if someone had politely said "Sorry no photography allowed" I would have immediately complied. She said they would leave me alone but this did not happen. One of them followed me and stood and watched me in the Picasso/ Chagall room. It was extremely uncomfortable. It was also quite clear they were still hostile by the way the group of them stared at me. This entirely ruined my visit so I decided to leave. When I was leaving I asked the ticket lady why she didn't tell me exactly where I could not photograph. She said she was sorry. The head of security came and some other staff. The head of security said it was wrong the way they treated me. They called the same woman I had spoken to before. While I was talking to her one of the guards who had been following me stood staring at me the entire time. I asked her why he was staring at me. She said they are worried about losing their jobs and that I might steal a painting. This was nuts. She said they are just doing their jobs. I've never seen this in any other museum. There were two young men - also foreigners - walking around and they weren't watching or harassing them. I just find it absurd the thought of a 66 year old man in a panama hat, shorts, with a camera around his neck trying to get out with a big (ugly) canvas through the security gate and then the front door. I asked her her name and she said "PR" so I assume her first name is Public and last name Relations. She told me she was very sorry and they sincerely hoped I would visit again. She said she will tell the Director's and they will put up signs. She again said she hoped I would visit again. I said that's not going to happen. I was not offered my money back. In addition this Museum is in a remote area and they have no wifi. I was unable to order a taxi which they did for me and cost twice what a regular cab would. At that point, I just wanted to get away. This was the most disturbing, embarrassing and intimidating experience I have ever had in a museum.
