The Freedom Square or Liberty Square (Armenian: Ազատության հրապարակ, Azatut'yan hraparak), also known as Opera Square and Theatre Square (Թատերական հրապարակ, T'aterakan hraparak) until 1991, is a town square located in Kentron (Center) district of Yerevan, Armenia. The square is part of the Yerevan Opera Theater complex, located just to the south of the main opera building, between the opera park and the Swan lake. Along with the Republic Square, the Freedom Square is one of the two main squares in central Yerevan. It is bordered with four streets: Tumanyan Street, Teryan Street, Sayat Nova Avenue and Mashtots Avenue. The statues of writer Hovhannes Tumanyan and composer Alexander Spendiaryan are located in the square.

A gorgeous square specifically at night. The lights on the stones of the building make it just stunning. There is a water show on the fountain but not on a Tuesday sadly. We went on a Tuesday and missed it. A really stunning square and worth a visit.

Freedom Square by the Opera House is a lovely part of the city with lots of activity. There are loads of outdoor cafes and bars and the place seems very popular with families.
Lots of greenery and benches to relax on and only a three minute walk from the Cascades.

This review is quite late. The Freedom Square offers a different kind of attraction - bush sculptures artistically rendered like the piano and the guitar, among others.

Visiting this wonderful topiary site in downtown Yerevan was fun. I don't know how they are able to sculpt so many different items from shrubbery, but I do know that we enjoyed seeing all of them.

Right between "The Opera" and "Swan Lake" in Yerevan's "Kentron District", you will find "Freedom Square", an open space considered as a symbol of democracy in Armenia, as it has staged, throughout the years, many public manifestations towards democracy. "Freedom Square" is also known as "Liberty Square", "Opera Square", "Theater Square" and, finally, in Armenian - "Azatutyan Square". Statues of famous writer Hovhannes Tumanyan and of acclaimed composer Alexander Spendiaryan are placed almost in front of "The Opera" building. An underground three-storey parking lot can accomodate 500 cars, what is fantastic for all those attending "The Opera". As a tourist attraction, it is not so interesting and I would not recommend for a visit, but you'll certainly pass many times through "Freedom Square" on your way to "The Opera" itself, to the "Cascade Complex" or to "Northern Avenue". Enjoy!

Not too much to do here, and the design of the area is also not very impressive. The Opera building is nice but not more than that.

Freedom square is the heart of downtown Yerevan. Many main attractions of the city are in walking distance from the square. The Yerevan national museum is on the western part and the main boulevard is to the north. You can find many restaurants and quality shops around the square
